The dogs put on a ritual whenever Eleanor comes home after an absence of any amount of time. As soon as they hear the truck coming near the driveway, I swear even before they can see it, they start the Dance of Joy, whooping and whining-in-a-happy-kinda-way and jumping all about until she gets in the house. (Do they do this for me? I can't say for certain, because, duh, I'm not here when I'm coming home, but I suspect it has to do with how much more Eleanor is out of the house compared to me, plus it's a lot easier for not-so-good-eyesighted dogs to see her honkin yellow truck compared to my dull drab car.)
Moments ago, Eleanor called about something she'd been doing this morning, but also to report that the people she'd visited had a fresh nest of swallows in their garage.
To which, of course, I instantly replied: "African or European?"
Seconds later, from down the hall, I heard the chorus of Mommy's Home! Which made me wonder, Why did she call when she was just outside the house?
I wondered even more when I went out to the driveway and saw there was no truck. There was, however, a loose dog. Tasha must've been put out in the back before Eleanor left for her appointment and, I, for court. She can sit quietly out back for hours if she's in the right mood, so I never even knew she'd been left out when I came back here; and the door to the front yard from the garage must've blown open sometime after I came back in around 11. In years past, Tasha would play a mean game of keepaway with us, usually requiring all three of us and some use of cars or bikes to round her up. This time, though, she just ran playfully back into the garage, as if to say, "Leave? ME?!? Why would I leave?"
So it was just Ebony who was leading the canine chorus, and she was doing it to warn me that her sister was oot and aboot.
They look out for each other, these two. And for us:)
