8:30- show up at DMV to get Emily her learners permit with enhanced license certification (after next week, she'll need that to get in and oot of Canada).
8:31- discover that the new mall-based DMV office doesn't open until 10, but amazingly, get to be first in line.
9:00- first tag-team switch in places so Ray can mallwalk and try to find wireless.
9:01- discover that mall has no fewer than 200 wireless routers, not a one of which allows access. (What, you thought DMV had wireless? My, you make me giggle.)
9:30 (or, when we would've arrived if we'd known the correct opening time)- queue behind us is backed up from Clarence to the northern reaches of Alden. We never would've made it out of here in under two hours if we'd come at the "right time."
9:50: lights go on inside the office. Customer #2: "They're waking up." Me: "Coming out of their coffins is more like it."
10:00, pretty much on the dot- The gate goes up, and as we confidently cross the threshold, DMV employee says, and this is a direct quote, "Wait. I have to tell you where to go." (I think the whole experience essentially already DID that.)
10:17- Emily passes the written test. Untrained seals could pass the written test. Don't overthink, grrl.
10:20- My left forearm has sprouted a bleeding zit. I presume this happens often to the eternally damned.
10:21- Eye test passed, we are dispatched to a waiting area whilst an infinite number of monkeys prepare her actual documents. We are told she will be "called by name." With luck, that name will actually be "Emily."
10:27- Half the kid's high school is here today because they had a day off.
10:30- Did I say we'd be out of here in two hours? My, I make me giggle. They've called Tellerman, Singh and even Godot by name, even though we were the first ones here. They must be Democratic party donors.
10:38- It's printed out. Those blue-backgrounded things with the funny sideways typeface that we used to get as our permanent licenses until they started putting pictures on them. My daughter is semi-legal.
11:00- Back home. I drove. Possibly for the last time. Door to door in 2½ hours isn't all that bad.
