Emily got a B on her junior-year English thesis- around the same grade I got on mine, 33 Mays before. The only below-average component of her grade was for using too many extended quotes from her source materials- the same criticism I got back then, and have received in all kinds of contexts since.
Then, the other day, she brought home a copy of her high school literary mag. My high school's magazine published in my sophomore year, but none of the kids cared enough to put it out in our junior year. Some friends of mine and I resuscitated it and it came out again in our senior year. So it's especially endearing to me to see my kid's artwork on the cover of her junior-year edition:

I signed her up for her SATs today. Her NYSSSA package goes out this weekend. Our little girl isn't so little anymore.
