This is my Firefox home page. Plain ol' Google, lean and mean, the way God intended it to be:

At times, that "enable chat" thing goes haywire, and I never did figure out how to expand the blue middly part so the copyright line isn't cut off, but that's the way. Uh huh uh huh. I like it. Uh huh uh huh.

Provided, however, that it all works.

There are three references on there to gmail. One's the link on the top line, which still takes you to your mailbox straightaway, but it doesn't tell you if you've got any. The second is on the far right of that line with my gmail address, and it has no functionality.  Ah, but the third, right next to the dreaded "enable chat," has always been my quickest indication of incoming. Every time I refreshed that page, it, too, would instantly refresh with the count of what pearls of wisdom awaited me.

There's a gmail notifier in my systray, too, which does the same thing, but it's on its own refreshing schedule, independent of the browser, and  requires mousework and right-clicking to activate manually; 99 percent of the time, the widget beat it, by seconds if not minutes.

Alas, no longer.  Widget's been dead like a dead thing for days. This, so far, is the only explanation I can find as to why, which I won't bore you with (further) unless you care to click it and read about tokens and credentials.

If you've got a better idea for a replacement gizmo, or a replacement home page for that matter, your recommendations are always welcome. Whether I'll actually know you've emailed me? That's sumthin diffint.
