Continuing the day's fascination with all programmes British:

Eleanor's been re-reading I Capture the Castle, a thoroughly modern(er) British grrl coming-of-age story with one-third less of the depression you get out of Brontë or Austen. This 1948 novel was written by Dodie Smith, who also penned the tail of Pongo and those of his 100 Dalmatian comrades, and it definitely resonated with both of us when we read it.

We'd thought about trying to lay hands on the lovely-sounding DVD of same a few months back, when we discovered Romola Garai, the actress who portrays Castle's Cassandra, in last year's amazement that was Atonement.

The DVD's reply was, seemingly, "Hands off." Netflix added Castle to my ever-growing list of "saved" films, mostly Anglo-Irish (The Dead, Truly Madly Deeply, Hear My Song, and Topsy-Turvy- and, yeah, OK, the very United Statesian Tapeheads), and my Amazon/BN connections just laughed at my requests for an original Region 1 edition. I could, however, purchase used copies along the Brazilian river for anywhere from 30 to well over 100 bucks.

I hemmed. I hawed. Did I mention it's my wife's birthday today? She could really use a touching pressie like this.

Just for giggles, though, I went to our local library's online catalog, on the off chance that some ingenious librarian might have snagged a copy when the DVD came (and apparently flamed out stateside) in 2003.

Off chance, my ass. Practically every freakin' branch has a copy. I'm picking it up tomorrow:)

Eleanor got a BN gift certificate, a lovely comida sudamericana at the neighborhood tapas/awesomefood place, and my undying love.
