In honour of the anniversary of our nation's declaration of independence from the Royalists, our daughter is spending five days in the land of the Loyalists to the north. Well, more west than north; a schoolfriend's family has a cabin over near Sherkston Beach and they invited her to spend the week from yesterday through this coming Sunday.

This is the longest both of us have been away from Em in years, and I do miss her, but somehow her chores get done faster, and the arguments don't last nearly as long, when she's not around.  Making it weirder is that she'll be home all of a day before I hit the road myself for three days getting to/being in/returning from Noo Yawk.

After dinner tonight, the missus and I had our first Just Us movie date in quite awhile, and we spent it in utter silliness at the big-budget remake of Get Smart. I was a longtime fan of the Don Adams original, and many of the online sites devoted to the show (primarily the biggest of them, wouldyoubelieve.com) have been rather dismissive of the movie effort, mainly for not involving Mel Brooks, Buck Henry or hardly any of the remaining actors beyond very token roles in the production.

Sorry about that, but we laughed our fool heads off at it. The "A-story" generating most of the script time and action was stupid and implausible- but hey, so were most of the original show's "plots." Both efforts devoted just as much effort, though, to developing the main characters of 86 and 99 and the growth of their relationship together. Differently, to be sure, but plausibly and in the case of the film, downright sweetly.  Plus there's political humor and just enough hat-tips to running jokes from the series, and at the far end of the credits, there's a dedication of the film to both Don Adams and Edward "Chief" Platt. Nice touches all around.

As for the other kind of KAOS in our lives (a/k/a "retail"), Eleanor has a regular day of work tomorrow. There are hot dogs and apple pie for when she gets home, and there will probably be a post or two about baseball on my other blog, so all we're lacking for the perfect stereotypical 4th of July is the Chevrolet. And a pink-haired kid.

I'm so glad to hear that "Get Smart" is good. Been dying to see it. I mean, after all, it has The Rock in it! :P

Hope Em's trip is wonderful and safe. Sounds like lots of fun is to be had.

Hey, I have a Chevy, so add that to your pie, hot dogs, Mets, and your 4th is complete!
