I suppose I shouldn't complain. If there's one thing I'm pretty good at, it's getting a decent night's sleep. I feel for the many here- and recently the number seems to be increasing- who are troubled with chronic insomnia, or sleepwalking, or just inability to work a six-to-eight hour block into their nightttime hours. Usually, I hit the pillow, and unless something's really stressing me out, I'm gone within minutes and stay that way until the animals arrive between 5:30 and 6.

Ah, but there's the rub of the eyes. It's unusual these days for me to have to be up that early, and the feeding is usually over by just past 6, even with a precision tete-a-tete we have to execute with the five of them so Biggsy the Rehab Cat can eat in supervised peace. I'll usually eat my own breakfast and read the overnight accumulations here, but that rarely keeps me up past 6:30. So back to sleep I try to go, and that's where the ill effects hit.

No matter how quiet it is, or what it's doing outside, I have incredible difficulty getting back to sleep these days. And when I do (for usually, eventually I do)? The dreams are nasty, and very real, and usually work-related to the point where I wake up un-refreshed and disoriented and wishing I'd just gone to work at 6:30.

I know, I could do just that. Or throw some clothes on and go for a walk, alone or with dog. Or use the time as an enforced interval for writing, something I've fallen out of the practice of doing beyond the blather I put here.

What I don't want to is what I'm doing now: wondering what the significance is of my former boss bitching to me about my current clients and why he's doing it while lacking one of his four front teeth.

Supposedly, I will be able to change that morning routine a little starting tomorrow. One of life's small frustrations has been our local newspaper's internet cycle. It's been posting the morning paper's full local content, but not until 9 a.m. and never updating it during the day. They never came out and said so, but I suspected this policy was to protect the circulation, mostly in business offices and such, of their limited morning edition. Now that they've gone entirely to morning delivery of the physical edition, the time is apparently right to switch their online delivery, so today's the final day of 9 a.m. upload. Everything after that will be posted to the site in real time as it's being slotted for the next day's paper edition.

I loved the quote from the paper's editor heralding this change: "We know very well that we can't ignore the Internet."  Gee, ya think? This is a newspaper that, until about five years ago, insisted on referring to women with "Mrs." or "Ms." in every reference and would only print traditional only-the-bride-in-white pictures with wedding announcements. It only modernized its printing facilities about two years ago and was one of the last papers in the country to put any editorial content on the internet (and even now only keeps the links alive for ten days).

So come with me if you want to see the big new show:

9:05 Same shit, not even a different day.

I wonder if Warren Buffett tolerates this kind of delay when it's his private jet scheduled to take off at 0900.

It's a supreme injustice. All my life I waited for the luxury of time to sleep as late as I pleased. And now, the older I get, the less sleep I'm able to maintain. Pisses me off!

I have to say that I have the art of going back to sleep after waking to a science. Maybe it's the Flexeril???
