captainsblog: (Clash)
♫I fought the tech, and the, tech.... lost?!?♫

A couple of such moments today. I had to reboot this old beast sometime yesterday, which led to a browser crash, which led to various sites logging me out. Most of them just needed a re-login, a few with the old two-factor  bit, but the local fishwrap refused to do it last night. Like many these days, it went from a single login-password screen to one with login on the first and password on a separate one. Password managers do not play nice with these, which I get, but even attempts to tell it "I forgot" or "I want a new one" got me nowhere- and their paywall was keeping me out.

I wrote an email. It was not a happy one.\

I had a browser crash and your site is asking me to subscribe.  When I click login, instead of it being the previous screen with my login and password saved, it has switched to only asking for a login.  The next screen does not prompt for a password but asks me to set up an account. I have an account. It does not accept the existing password. It does not accept a browser-generated secure password. It does not accept any variation on the above.

I also seriously resent getting "flash sale" promos for less money for a year than I pay you each month.

Fix this.

I never got an answer, but when I tried another article this morning, the single-screen login page was back, and I got back in. At least until the next damn crash:P

The rest of the day was at my desk, an improvement over the original plan for a day on the road. There just wasn't enough to do to justify wasting 2-3 hours of my time staring at mile markers. Among the things I determined to fix in that time was a tech problem that's been plaguing me for months.  Which brings us to today's episode of

After going on a year and a half, I have FINALLY succeeded in getting a stupidass Xerox all-in-one unit to scan documents directly to this computer. I've been sneakernetting using a USB stick since Day One.  The Big Red X was utterly unhelpful in this process, which requires keying in IP and port values in a remote entry screen as opposed to O LOOK A SCANNER U WANT I ACCEPT INPUT FROM IT like every other fucking printer in our home and my offices does. Their manual was gobbledygook, there were no online videos, and when I called for actual support about it a few weeks ago, I was told since it had just gone out of warranty, it would be billable for someone to tell me how to set up my own printer.

Finally today, I found step-by-step in a deep dive to a Toner Tower support forum. The solution to the mystery was that when I configured this laptop with the office wifi, I didn't make it shareable on the wifi network. Now it is.  Soon as I did THAT, the scans magically flew through the air into the scans folder.

Bite me, Chester Carlson.

The other significance to The Only Band That Matters was in rewatching the pilot of The Nevers tonight, Joss Whedon's latest kickass-woman creation.  We got more than halfway through it earlier in the week, with me missing a ton of what was going on. An AVClub review suggested I'd just not seen a bunch of things, which Eleanor confirmed she hadn't seen, either. Well- turns out there's a reason for that. All's I'm saying is, stay with the episode. Much gets cleared up as you go, and watching twice isn't a bad idea, either.

The HBO Max installment ends, as Mare of Easttown did earlier in the week, with a preview of upcoming episodes and a brief making-of about the initial one. It's the former of them that brings the Clash into the picture- in a very well done way.

Watch. Listen. Be Touched.
