I took 'em. They're all out on the Facething if you want to see them. But getting them here in even a semi-permanent way takes gymnastics I'm not up for right now. So, the summary of the weekend. A few moments of disagreement, but a lot more of laughs, and, eventually, of pictures.
* Cooking class continued. Last night was a simple-enough round of homemade pizzas on premade crusts, but the big event of the two-day weekend was learning how to turn a bigass piece of pork shoulder into several months worth of pulled pork for sandwiches and burritos. Yesterday after Eleanor bought it, I took notes on the initial potting of the pig, the temperature monitoring for it, the removal of the bone and an initial layer of fat, the turning the rest into manageable squarish pieces, and then the parking of the whole business overnight. Then after a trail walk this morning, the actual pulling of the pork from what we macro-chopped the night before and measuring it into Ziplocs for future use. We had the first of them tonight along with grilled corn on the cob (also me in charge), and they came out great. I even baked brownies! That we didn't even get into yet! But we're saving those for menus that have now been planned for the rest of the week.
* Said trail walk. Today was the last of the stupid-hot days we've had a weekslong stretch of, but I wanted to give Pepper an outing because she was a very good girl during all the cooking. It was just us, so no pictures of other dogs (or her), but I got some good ones of the flora along the trail.
* More poets. The same group as last weekend's Silo adventure had a shorter outing in an Elmwood Village park today, and we headed over there for about an hour.
* Meanwhile, on the telly,... We finally got to watching Summer of Soul, the documentary about, and including long-unseen footage from, the summer of 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival concert series that had as many studded stars as Woodstock. The only difference is that its footage sat in a cellar until right before this summer's release of this film. Amazing music, photography, and memories of a memorable event I lived 30 miles from and had no recollection of whatsoever.
* And of course, there'll be sport. The Bills completed their perfect preseason yesterday- and by "perfect" I don't mean they won all three games (even though they did) but that nobody got hurt in the effort. Meanwhile, the Left-for-Dead Mets actually managed to put bats on the ball last night and this afternoon and won two games in a row. Last night's was after they honored only the third former player in this, their 60th season, for his on-field accomplishments. Jerry Koosman joined the late Tom Seaver and the more recently enshrined Mike Piazza with the retirement of his number to the Citi Field rafters. They still have 15 home games remaining and plenty of other numbers they can retire, if that's what it takes to overcome their seven-game descent out of the first place they held for most of the year. I'll even head over to Shake Shack and cook for them if they need me to.
