It's too hot and too early for code. Scroll down for the story so far.

Day 07 - Least favorite episode of your favorite TV show

There are finales I hate more as finales- I've already mentioned a couple- but for sheer, bringing-up-the-rear quality (something that, sadly, happens literally once or twice in the episode), "Turnabout Intruder" retains my prize for the worst. Trek. EVER.

Part of the weirdness about this opinion is that I've known a ton of backstory about the episode for decades. Set the space-time continuum anomaly generator for 1975, Scotty!

Books like this were all we had for sci-fi in the 70s before Star Wars, kids. The chapter in question was titled "Beauty May Be Only Skin Deep, But Chopped Liver Can Get You Anywhere or Six Glorious Days on the Star Trek Set."  One of the three authoresses got to meet the cast and watch the filming of T.I., which turned out to be the final episode of The Original Series. They knew it, too- sort of. The cancellation word had come down from 30 Rock, but the Save Star Trek fan campaign, the biggest of its kind until then, was under way and I suspect the producers thought a little extra fan-friendliness would enhance their hopes for a fourth season. (The chopped liver came in because she brought some to the set, and the cast literally ate it up. I also learned from this chapter that DeForrest Kelley likes his toast oven-baked instead of electrocuted. Go figure.)

Which would all have been great, except this is the script they were left to work with.

It was known on the set, however incorrectly for its time, as "Captain Kirk- Space Queen." The sight of Shatner swanning about for more than half the screentime was over the top then and even weirder to look at in more enlightened times. The book, and the episode's Memory Alpha entry (from which I got most of my repressed memories refreshed recollections of the book), note all kinds of continuity errors and Just Plain Weirdnesses.

They were literally demolishing the Enterprise- or at least its set- while the episode was being filmed. Its scheduled airing wound up being pre-empted for the death of former President Eisenhower. You'd think they'd have taken the hint, but it aired, and for ten years, this was the transporter door that didn't hit Kirk in the ass on the way out.

We deserved better, and fortunately, we got it.

Oh please. Kirk-Spock slash has been on the net for years. I'm sure that started some of it.
