TGI Freakin' F!
Apr. 30th, 2010 06:42 pmI usually don't get all gaga (Lady or otherwise) over the coming of the weekend, but man am I ready for this one. Each of the past three days ended with late-afternoon work commitments, and while today's was the earliest of the three to begin and the soonest to end (around 2:45), it was also (a) in Rochester, (b) a formal and contested court hearing, and (c) the longest of the three, with client preparation beginning not long after 11. Also also, I had to do major running-about before and between the segments with the client today, mainly to get online funds in place so that Emily could....
wait for it....
ACCEPT HER R.I.T. ADMISSION!
It's of-fishkill, as of late this afternoon. The deposit and housing application shot off over the Intertubes soon after I got home late this afternoon. The financial aid acceptance (which, best as we can tell, cannot be internetted in and is going to the post office tomorrow morning where I can get a delivery receipt for it) will also be there by Monday. It was essentially a done deal from the time we visited last week, but there was still that last minute chance to hesitate, have one of the other schools suddenly get all sparkly on her with some new thing (she finally did hear from the last contender, Rhode Island School of Design, which waitlisted her), but in the end, That Was Her Final Answer.
Granted, it's only the beginning, but I think it's a good one.

Em's other two pieces of news from this week are also good. When she was on her spring break last week, she and I got into some unkind words and unkind silences about her progress, or as I saw it her lack thereof, in finishing up her driving lessons. The guy they assigned to her had become known around the house as Beldar, after the actual occupation of Dan Ackroyd's character on Saturday Night Live-

-but it was easier for Eleanor and I to joke about that because we didn't have him as our driving instructor. Beldar was a bit flaky in his demeanor (and a bit unreliable about showing up for the exact times and places for the lessons themselves), but balanced that by being a bit of a Nazi during the lessons themselves. About the only type of criticism he ever offered was along the lines of UR DOIN IT WRONG!, without being incredibly helpful about how to do (whatever) right. I offered to get her reassigned, and she resisted that, but AAA went and did it anyway; maybe he got sent back home toRemulak France. The new guy actually tells her what she should do, and is much less judgmental on the occasions that she doesn't. She's a bit preoccupied for the coming week- the next paragraphy part over the weekend, then two AP exams next week- but I think she'll be ready to roll not long after that. (Yes, Maryland, that snow-attracting car will likely be gone a month or two from now; I wouldn't rule out any Mothers Day blizzards, or even Fathers Day ones, until then.)
The other bit comes Sunday. As I've mentioned, the high school kids at church run an annual Youth Sunday service every year, and it's an especially touching rite of passage for the seniors each year. She is one of four this time- and the only grrl among them- who will be giving essentially a sermon during the hour, plus doing other things to lead the proceedings (she will be doing the childrens' time, aka the "Sass the Minister" segment). I have to get her to church tomorrow for practice, then at 9 Sunday morning because they do the identical service twice, but it will be worth every second of it to see her shine.
Other than those, I have few other plans not involving some serious study of the inside of my eyelids. And possibly my liver;)
wait for it....
