All Areas Apple Are Annoying.

I've subscribed through iTunes to the first two seasons of Portlandia, which also got us a special episode over the summer just automatically fed at the time to my account. In the craziness of last weekend, I forgot that a new episode had come out- one which, it seems, is actually the early premiere of their third season.

No notification of this came on the phone or puter, and the "tv shows" section of iTunes had nothing new, not even to buy. So I started a painfully slow "alternative" way of getting the feed, when I randomly ran the title back through the iTunes Store to see if there was a separate purchase link.  Wasn't, but there was a perfectly good link to download the new ep. For free.

----

Then the phone began misbehaving. I swear, the iPhone 4 has crappier phone reception than the old 3G did; anytime I'm near a computer, or out in traffic, it drops far more than the old one ever did.  Then, today, the iPad function started going bonkers; every album I started selected the first track of the playlist and then shuffled through the rest. I vaguely remember seeing the shuffle logo come on at various times, but now it wasn't appearing, and I had to google my way to the solution (shuffle can only be turned on or off while a song is playing, which makes incredible sense). In the process, though, I discovered another of the deep-Apple-core mysteries of life: the iPad function on the phone is factory-set to something called "Shake to Shuffle"- an annoying feature that drove me crazy many a time, usually while carrying my phone in an awkward spot. You turn it off in "Settings>Music."

It's also filling up far faster than I expected it to. I don't have a lot of apps on there besides the standard ones (a Firefox syncer, Couch to 5K, a couple of radio stations and the LJ app), and I purge photos regularly once they've synced to my computer, but even one extra podcast or a couple of new albums require me to clear stuff off.  It'd be nice to find some kind of extra memory or storage compression for the thing, but I tend to doubt the gatekeepers would allow such playing with perfection short of jailbreaking the phone.

----

And just to make it a perfectly sucky tech day, one of the earbuds on my latest new headphones has died. I rarely use both, but it's 50/50 which is the right one when I pick up a phone call.  I may have actually saved the receipt and packaging for this one, so if I can remember which Wegmans it came from, I might have a shot at exchanging it.

----

One final bitchslap at the Tao of Steve. I also went looking for last weekend's edition of QI, and made the unfortunate mistake of searching, not by series and episode number, but by title. Which, in this case, was "Jobs."

Far worse choices came up in response to that than even "Steve."

My first 'pod, one of the channels quit. I took it in to see if they could fix it (without much hope), and they said this was a fine time to buy a new one. Because, you know, you can't fix anything on them.

(Still a wonderful product, but I don't have a shrine in my living room.)

I've had a 3G and 4, and am seriously thinking my next phone will be a Samsung Gallaxy. It's kind of like the old Microsoft vs Apple battle of before for computer OS and I always went with MS back then for more flexibility. Best to get out of the Apple universe before too heavily invested in it's non-portable software.

May His Steveness have mercy on your blasphemous soul.

Just a thought, and I haven't confirmed it, but I've had the same issues with my memory filling up recently. Look at "Settings". Is there a little "1" there? That would be them wanting you to install the new iOS. I had no intention of doing that until they figured out the maps issue, so it's been sitting there for months. From what I've been able to google, it looks like it's a pretty large file. That could potentially be eating up your memory. Let me know if it works!

Yeah, I've had the "1" on there ever since they released the 6.0 software. Refused to D/L it but thought I'd try, now that the map thing is resolved. And.... it's still full up, but maybe not quite as much.
