Yesterday ended a workweek where I was in one courtroom or another for significant chunks of four out of the five days. (It's usually only one or two, and more than three is rare.) Most of the time in question was wasted waiting for other people to get through their own nonsensical legal stuff, but then, I'm sure that's how the people behind me felt about my cases.

Tomorrow will be spent for more time in church than usual: Emily will be participating in Youth Sunday (or, as fans of My Cousin Vinny call it, Ute Sunday) at the beginning of May, and they will be spending an hour or so before the next three Sunday services planning it. It's a rite of passage for the kids here, where the seniors give mini-sermons about how important their friendships and fellowship here have been to them. Her journey has been among the more unconventional- not in church at all for years, back for confirmation, then pretty much gone again until this year- but she is known and loved by more people of more ages in the congregation than just about anyone.

Today, then, I set aside for more of my own catching-up than I usually do. Eleanor did need some help with some outdoor work, which we accomplished without either (much less both) of us falling off ladders, but I've been doing officey gruntwork for most of the time since that. Of course, the printer chose this occasion to run out of ink, so I ran to Office Whorehouse to restock, and thought, while there, I'd pick up some extra adding machine tape before my final roll runs out.

Or not.  What is with these people, who insist on only selling replacement adding machine tape in cases of 24 rolls? I go through about a roll a year, and unless we rent out Emily's room to a Hobbit who could use it for toilet paper, there's no feckin way I'll ever go through that much in my remaining lifetime.

----

We continue to assume Emily's going away. Her RIT award came on Thursday, and it's about the same as Columbus, other than them each assuming something totally different about the amount of loan money that the rents will apply and qualify for. Eleanor already posted about this snafu-ery, which essentially requires the kid to commit to one school or the other by early May without knowing for sure until late June (if then) how much loan money (if any) we'll be able to get beyond the award. (If you're not on her friendslist, let me know and I'll forward the info from her post.)

I share her sentiment, though: it will all work out.

----

Finally, this is the first year, I think, I've had the privilege to pass along birthday wishes on this day, five pre-tax and ten pre-Pot, to a remarkable young woman who Eleanor and I have both come to know over these oddly shaped tubes.

I don't think I know any other degreed microbiologists, but if I ever had need for one, I'd certainly want someone as caring, as funny, and as macro-talented as Sarah is. The joy she takes from such a range of things- from a collegiate Harry Potter party to a snowman-inducing snowfall- is as contagious as anything I ever suspect she saw under a microscope.  Also, much healthier.

Happy birthday, [livejournal.com profile] digitalemur ::hugs from allusall::

Didja buy the adding machine tape? 'Cause you could always send some for Her Highness Sunshine to shred. Anybody you know that has a parrot would enjoy a roll or two!
