Just when you thought it couldn't get any weirder: New York has just out-Illinois'd the state of Illinois for political corruption.
Nearby Congressman Old Salty (D-Southern Tier, where the men as well as the sheep are nervous) decided to resign from Congress immediately, as in this coming Monday- just when his potential 218th vote could be more vital than ever.
Under state law, a special election may, but need not, be called to replace him.
Thus, the decision about whether to replace a disgraced Democratic Congressman is squarely in the hands of an even more disgraced Democratic Governor, who might just beat him to the unemployment line before Monday morning.
I wonder if Paterson is thinking, "WTF, I'm gonna hang anyway, may as well make some money off the deal."

I also have a perfect solution to stop this abortion nonsense from defeating the pass-then-reconcile stragedy:
Some flaming liberal Congressman/woman should introduce the Stupak Amendment as a separate bill in the House and get the 218 votes to pass it, thus clearing the way for the Senate bill to be voted on without that language being included in it.
Let it pass. Obama will veto it, and it'll never get two-thirds to override. But I want to see how badly it would make the far-right Republicants squirm, knowing they had to choose between voting against a pro-life position and advancing health care.
