♫We Two 'Rents of Buffalo are....♫
Dec. 31st, 2009 02:54 pmIt's not just the New Year tomorrow, but a Big Year beginning, for most purposes, over the weekend: Emily turns 18 on Sunday.
She took a big step today toward determining where she'll end this coming year, firing off her first college application to RIT. Four others await, all of them well-known art schools (in Pittsburgh, Maryland, Columbus OH and Rhode Island), and all will still involve submission of portfolios in various formats.
It seems not that long ago that I was sending off my own five applications (two Long Island colleges, Albany State, Cornell and Yale- all of which took me except George W. Bush's alma mater, which in hindsight seems like good karma). Like Emily, there were lots of wings on lots of prayers involved in those ventures, but somehow I made it through the process and the payment, and I have just as much faith that she will, also.

A few days ago, Em begged off any gifting to her for her birthday, in favor of a movie-and-pizza combo party, the film of choice being Princess and the Frog, which she's wanted to see for weeks. Earlier today, I finally wrestled a body count out of her, and on my erranding today I got the seven Golden Tickets for her, the BF, three other friends and the two of us.
I also steadfastly refused to heed her no-present crap, so after the great time she had at TSO last night, I went into Beans & Noodles to get one of their CDs for her. They had plenty of the new, non-Christmas collection that the lead guitarist (who Cameron described as being "David Bowie only without the tight pants") had been heavily pimping throughout the show, but they were completely sold out of the entire Transsiberian Christmas catalog.
As I picked and paid for Night Castle, I asked the cashier if there'd been other requests for their other stuff during the day today.
Oh yeah, she replied. Didn't they play here yesterday?
Uh, yeah, I said. I know that retailers try to keep the inventory down, but when 40,000 people go to a show that's been advertised more than the freakin' Shamwow, somebody in management might think about ticking up the stock at least a little, plzkthx?
----
My only failed mission of the afternoon was stocking up at Wegmans. Even the furthest reaches of the parking lot were full with cars waiting for cart-laden shoppers to return to them. So I bailed and just got wine for the weekend and champagne for tonight. Despite all the Good Riddances I've read in the past few days, and despite some recent unpleasantness in the medical department, this really has been a good year for the three of us, and we're looking forward to even better ones for all of us- and all of you- in the year ahead:)
