Best. Worst day of work. Eva.
Dec. 30th, 2009 09:18 pmIt wasn't working out all that well by 11 or so this morning. I wasn't getting much of anywhere clearing a backlog from my desk, and it was getting clearer that my afternoon deposition was going to be something of a flameout due to a lack of certain documents. Meanwhile, today was Emily's Big Day Out, with Transsiberian Orchestra in town this afternoon, and I was up against a deadline of around 1:00 to get everything done for work and her (and her boyfriend) down to the arena before the deposition began at 2.
Then, leaving my office with mail, I assplanted on the front walkway on a nice smooth patch of black ice, and apparently looked too woozy to the office manager to even drive away. "You'd better come in to be sure you're not too loopy to drive," she said. "Well, loopier than usual."
I was fine, for the most part- the ass is nicely padded, thanks- and things did get better after that.
It was agreed to postpone the deposition for a couple of weeks. Instantly, that meant I didn't have to take the kids to the show two hours early all of a sudden- and I got a buttload more work done before we did leave. Meanwhile, I'd promised Eleanor yesterday that she, too, could have a Big Day Out tomorrow, and she picked the art gallery for that. With Em and Cameron downtown for three hours, it was easy for us to move that outing to that same time slot, and we spent an enjoyable afternoon with old friends and new in the Albright-Knox.
Also, since we'd all be together following the show, I decided to take everyone out for Italian after I picked them up from what, by all reports, was an awesome show- "more than awesome," in Emily's words. It wasn't complete perfection- Eleanor had a fall of her own walking to our table after a relatively long (for Frank's) wait- but there was good company, excellent food, and an awful lot of laughs about everything from Steven Wright to the theme from Benny Hill.
Somehow, the animals survived an almost-three-hour-late feeding, there's a big hunka hunka rising dough Eleanor will be making bread with, and I am exhausted after a long but happy day.
