A lot of our discretionary Christmas purchasing money wound up in the hands of very deserving medical professionals this month, and some of Emily's gifts came early, so there was just one package remaining for her under the tree this morning: Nightlight, the National Lampoon parody of It Which Must Not Be Named, which Em had given to some of her own friends but hadn't had a chance to read herself.
She smiled, but I sensed a little disappointment, so I said, "There's a bookmark in there. Don't forget to check that out."
The bookmark was actually a ticket envelope. Admission for two to next week's Transsiberian Orchestra show downtown- about the only thing she'd actually asked for this whole holiday season. I can't go- it's a 3 p.m. show and I have a deposition downtown that afternoon- but once it became a twosome purchase, it suddenly became affordable in a Gift of the Magi kinda way, and she and Cameron will have one kickass good time.
We also told Eleanor about her own special gift, which, like the Magis', hadn't quite made it to B-hem yet. One of Emily's friends is looking to sell his Wii, with a bunch of its games, and that sort of activity sounds like just the ticket for a housebound, bored recovering burn patient.
Meanwhile, we have Sarah McLachlan's Christmas album playing, just finished watching most and best of Mr. Holland's Opus on the cable, and there's a very pretty chicken getting ready to be the guest of honor at our table for three this afternoon.
----
Last night, Em acolyted at the candlelight service. Lessons and Carols, in the King's College Cambridge tradition, with the choir and a dozen-piece orchestra in awesome form. Not even Christmas can keep me from the fine line of blasphemy, though; I made up a deleted scene from the Evangelists' recorded tale, in which God Himself appears to the recorder of the story, just to say,
Luke. I am the Father.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Speaking of Christmas Day sci-fi epics: I don't suppose anybody has a link to a certain something laying about wot they might share.
What, you want puppy-dog eyes? I got those:

Merry Christmas from all the kids here, old and young:)
ETAThe puppy is very happy, having shared in an awesome Christmas dinner that Eleanor made. Her daddy is about to be even happier after that dinner, thanks to something else just shared.
