The trip odometer rolled past 600 right before I exited the Mass Pike for the play-it-halfway hotel stop between Hartford and Boston I'd reserved. And there are still miles to go east, and plenty more back the other way, before I'll truly be Headin' Home.

It's been fun, though. I miss all the grrls (and the one boy in the yarn basket), but there's been plenty to keep my mind and my accelerator going this second full day.

My sister's seeing much better already. Her other eye has a lesser cataract in it, and there's still some concern about retinal issues in the one they fixed, but so far so good. I was on my way by 11 this morning, and after Meeting the Met Fan randomly in the World Famous Roscoe Diner halfway to I-84 (more about him and his fam in the quote list later), I was at my niece's not long after 3, for a nice visit with 1 and 99&44/100s percent of my relatives.

No pictures of Babymama- she protested any attempt, saying "I look ass!" and my few sneak shots didn't come out- but here's some of the scenery from Casa Nursery:

Baby's crib, done up in an appropriate either-gender frog format. (I suggested Kermit for a boy's name, but we all know it's gonna be a girl.) Word apparently got out that Nicole and her husband like frogs, so you'll be seeing quite more of those.

----

One of them- a bank-slash-stash of some sort, complete with electronic ribbit when you lift his head.

----

An old-stylee baby picture from Donna's collection, gracing a corner of the nursery

----

Another family "hairloom," as we like to put it. Nicole's sister gave her this little book, which my mom had given to her mom, when Sandy had her, 40 years ago this fall.

----

And one more froggie overlooking the room- this one, we agreed, bears a distinct resemblance to Nicole's dad, not quite two years gone from this earth but still very much part of her life and ours. It's wonderful that the baby will have a talisman from each of her mommy's parents in there with her, even if they can't be physically with us to see the excitement.

----

Morning plans are set for tomorrow, about an hour from where I landed. Some of the more fun sets of words from the day today:

"We have got to resume normal eating habits"
-from one table over at the Roscoe Diner. I turned to watch Dad Met fan pouring the contents of two vanilla milkshakes over some other form of food while his five-to-ten-year-old kids just giggled their fool heads off. He had a good attitude about it, though. You don't go on vacation to diet, especially if you're doomed to spend ANY of it in Roscoe, New York.

The recession will be over long before those responsible for it have been paroled
-a cheery electronic billboard off the shoulder of I-84 as you go through Waterbury, Connecticut. Not sure which financial planner or realtor sponsored this inspirational message, although considering that Bernie Madoff has to serve something like 450 years before HE's eligible, I'm somehow missing the point of it all.

Get the body of a God, and no we don't mean Buddha
-sign outside a spa on Route 10 in Cheshire on the way to and from my niece's. I thought of going in, signing up for a three-month membership, and when they asked for my credit card, telling them, "Oh, uh, there won't be any money, but when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness."

----

ETA. I forgot to link to this, from [livejournal.com profile] platypus, but except for the video game references, it's about 80 percent accurate for all the wymyns on my Flist and in my life (possibly higher if you count the animals- after all, Zoey is partially named for Mrs. Hoban Washburne):

How to woo a nerdy girl

Goodnight from Shrewsbury. I don't think I have much taming left in me.
