The sneaker is still missing, but the past 36 hours have been almost entirely rain-free and I finished the mowing job using an even older, rattier pair of Chuck Taylor Converse All-Stars. The "almost" qualification comes because, as I worked my way into the furthest corner of the back yard yesterday, I felt the overly familiar beginning of yet another rainstorm on my forehead. Several curses later, I looked up, and not only had it stopped, but the other half of the back yard was bathed in sunshine. We haven't seen or felt a droplet since. It's 77F in the living room as I write this, but the humidity is so low, and the breeze so delightful, that it's a major improvement over the recent week of 72F days where we had to shut windows and crank the AC into the upper 60s just to drain the humidity out of the house.

Things were worse to the east of us the other night, where some towns had tornadoes touching town. One, I knew, was the hometown of a client, so I spoke with him today. At the same hour as the broadcast tornado warnings, he was out in his yard weeding, with a sunny sky and no sign of trouble, yet four miles away from him, the following day, the main drag from the 90 to Darien Lake was still closed due to the devestation in that immediate but small corridor.
"I think they call that a microburst," he said.
"I think they call that 'Holy Shit!'," I thought but did not reply.
