Mr. & Mrs. Spastic Go to the Vet
Jul. 22nd, 2009 04:23 pmJust checking if Eleanor will pick the same title, because she was there for it, too. Ebony had what turned out to be just a regular checkup at noon today, after the scare we got last weekend, and as usual she was her semi-panicked self in the car the whole trip there. Upon arrival, I made the mistake of trying to let her out of the back seat myself (Eleanor sitting to her other side); I got out, quickly shut the front door, then opened the back and grabbed the leash.
Sixty-seven pounds of dog proceeded to wedge themselves between the front seat and the door frame as she decided to go out the same door Daddy did.
Once inside, she was fine. Well, mostly. She's getting older, she's a big girl, and has Lab and shar pei breeds in her that each contribute to chronic problems that are starting to show. On the Lab end, her hind legs are showing signs of stiffness. This vet picked right up on it, and gave us some anti-inflammatories to try. Longer term, and on the front end, she noticed that Ebony's eyes (insert Bob Welch song here) were starting to sag a little; this delightful feature of canine aging comes from her shar pei side, and if not treated eventually, will lead, not to blindness, but to a fair amount of discomfort keeping her eyes open.
We got a referral to Dr. Champagne. I am not making this up. Dr. C is a veterinary opthamologist, who specializes in removing some of the squishy skin around the eyeball to make it far more comfy for the dog to keep her eyes open. Yes, my dog is getting plastic surgery, and is worth every penny of it.
She was a complete sweetheart with everyone, including at least one little kid and several much smaller dogs- they had a "muzzle" note on her chart from a prior visit, but that proved totally unnecessary- and she was much quieter on the ride home and happy to be there when we got here.
I just remembered that there were some more recent pictures of our big baby on Emily's phone when we switched it out earlier this month. Here she is from a few weeks ago-

And this is a smaller and blurrier, yet truly amazing, picture of Ebony's older siblings, Tasha (left) and Tazzer. Yes, they love each other that much:
