After Eleanor went to bed last night, I was in the living room, fiendishly cranking out my month-end billing data, watching the Mets blow a late lead to a team with less talent than their own AAA farm club, and enjoying a final glass of Le Grape, when out of the corner of my eye came some motion.

Cat motion.

Michelle was returning to the scene of the crime. Or in this case, grime.

I reported on this briefly the last time (and, far as we know, the only time before this) it happened; it was also right after I'd done a full water change and tank/filter cleaning, so the leavings in the filter bags couldn't have been much more than a bunch of charcoal.

This time, once again, was a day after a full cleaning; this time, though, I got to watch the Maztur Cat Burglr (I can has catburglr?) in action.

It's amazing how she does this without opposable thumbs.  First, the cover has to come off:

It's not locked down- yet- but it does require significant jostling to lift it, and the cover alone weighs five ounces soaking wet, or just about the weight of a standard-issue cat fud can, but it's a marvel to watch her wriggle it and jiggle it with just her front paws, until it looks more like this:

That's Momo going by, who she shows no interest in whatsoever

This is where the teef join in the fun. She uses her paws for purchase, and slowly lowers her kisser into the trough- which is full of water*, stinky water at that, I might add- and then starts pulling the spongy part up for an evening snack.

This time, I caught her before she could do more harm to herself or others. We have a bigass rock which goes on top of casseroles and cookers when she and her brother show interest in more stovetop pursuits. If I wasn't afraid of her toppling it into the tank, I'd move it there right now. Some other kind of jerry-rigging will have to do in the meantime.

----

* Given her talents, I may want to fly her over to Oxon if they're doing a followup on the academic study I heard about yesterday on Wait Wait. Yes, the oldest and most prestigious uni in the Western world devoted three years and 300,000 quid to research that proved, beyond the shadow of a doubt, that....

wait for it....

Ducks like water.

Not to be outdone, I understand Cardiff is planning a multiyear interdisciplinary study utilizing their programmes in veterinary, internal medicine and forestry to find out every last thing there is to know about the connection among bears, shite and woods.

*swats* Nah, we just weed out anyone with interesting and novel ideas.

Damn. I figured something like THAT was the only thing Icehole could've been devoting himself to academically all these months.

He wasn't at Cardiff-- he was at UWIC. Different uni entirely.
