Considering that today began with the bestest of newses- Eleanor's post-operative gunk was entirely benign- I seemed to be determined to spend the rest of the day getting in my own way and tripping over my own feet.

Making it even stranger was this being the first day in a week when I didn't have any appointments, commitments or particularly heavyweight anxiety on me.

Still.

Eleanor left for work around 10, asking me to take tonight's entree out around 5:30 tonight and put it in the microwave (not to zap but as a secure storage facility) to warm the meat to room temperature. Duly noted.

I finished a morning of processing and puttering around 1, and packed up my stuff for the office and the gym. My .mp3 player was nowhere to be found. Had I left it there last night when I was doing cardio? Entirely possible.

Little mail at work, except an incoming document needing a client's signature. Placed it in pick-up box.

Got to gym. No sign of player. Worked out anyway, through a soundtrack heavy on Britney and Hanson (the real original, not the South Park parody of it I had in my head), and got several chapters further into a seriously good book I'm reading.

Home again, jiggety jog. Player residing comfortably in right dress shoe I'd worn into the gym yesterday.  Book now missing.

Suddenly realized that document in pick-up box has no notation whatsoever on it as to who it's for, what it is, or nuthin'.

Also realized that 5:30 had come and gone. Took meat out of freezer to start warming to room temperature. Generally felt useless.

After finally realizing that Eleanor was actually scheduled to work until 6:30, retraced many steps. Office: labeling pick-up document and calling client to tell him it's there. Gym: finding book sitting exactly on shelf where I'd left it whilst cleaning elliptical.

Wine on way home. Hey, yaknow?

Around 7, Eleanor returned home, kid in tow. Microwave yields two still-frozen hunks of meat. Me (starting to hit actual defrost buttons on microwave): "How much do these weigh?" Her: "Oh, the weight must be on the other half of the package in the freezer. Use half of that weight."

Me, affecting le sheepish:"Ummmm, you mean the freezer as in where I got these from, not the meat drawer where the other half had been defrosting the whole damn day?"

Shit.

----

All in all, though? Unthawed meat safely returned to freezer. Mostly thawed meat cooked and was delicious. Book and .mp3 player under control for another day.

And I'd do every stitch of that all over again, tomorrow and the next day and the next day, as long as today started with "Benign."
