Today was essentially a day in three acts:
Church- Gail listened to, loved, and thanked me for the re-recording of the tape I did for her last week. It played fine in her car, on her boombox and in one other place I'm forgetting, but her Bose Acoustic Wave player rejected it. Somehow, that seems perfectly appropriate. Lois woulda kicked Dr. Bose's ass.
Library- Emily's English class went to the bigass downtown library last month for researching their term papers, and she wound up far more fond of its extensive collection of books on graphic art. So today, we returned- dropping off the 910 pounds of once-renewed tomes from that trip, and replaced them with another 915 or so of similar ones. I did some browsing as well, adding books from two authors who I'd heard about recently on NPR to my way-too-slow collection of 2009 books read- one by Richard Price of, most recently, The Wire fame; the other by Ron Rosenbaum, who's been chronicling conspiracies and other secret things since he introduced the world to phone phreakers back in a 1971 Esquire article.
Fillum- Whilst waiting for Eleanor to get home from work, I finished the first half of the first of the two-part Campions starring Peter "Five" Davision. Then, during and after dinner, we watched another treat from the downtown DVD collection: Iris, a remarkable Miramax/BBC memoir of the life and loss of famed British novelist Iris Murdoch. Judi Dench and Jim Broadbent play the older Iris/John couple, while Kate Winslet and Hugh Bonneville are their earlier counterparts. It's a sad tale in the end, but told through a series of flashbacks and flashforwards that keep it from becoming too damn maudlin.
Three more trips downtown this week. We'll see if I can keep the poundage down to less than the kid's.
