Through "Fathers Day," that is, ep. 8 in the continuing series of rotting my brain and all,....

Just a few simple questions.

Perhaps most obvious of all: why is he, and/or it, called "Doctor Who" when through now six full hours of watching, I've yet to hear Nine refer to himself as anything other than "the Doctor" sans the interrogatorific honorific?

Why do all'yall refer to Daleks as plural when there is, at least at one moment in time and space, only one of them?

And is there ANYTHING these people won't rip off? Two eps in, I saw and noted the parallels between "End of the World" and Douglas Adams, which turn out to be forgivable, since apparently he wrote for the original show even before writing HHGTG and such. But c'mon. The "Aliens of London" arc has every element of TNG's "Conspiracy" episode except the worm salads; "The Long Game" apes the Mos Eisley cantina; and this latest bit, "Father's Day," is crawling (or, rather, flying) with gravelings.

(Speaking of DLM, did YOU know that they just released a direct-to-DVD sequel with most of the original cast? No Rube, sadly, but most of the rest are back. Netflix still says "very long wait." Gee, maybe Showtime underestimated the popularity of the thing?)

(And speaking of speaking-of's, apparently there's a Skiffy Season One marathon of Doctor Who on March 12th, which will probably begin right around the time I've finished streaming them all. Check your local listings.)

His true name is unknown (this gets dealt with in s4), but the name he chose was The Doctor. As for calling him 'Doctor Who,' that's a bit of an open question. In a Big Finish audio it was described as an editorial mistake on a series of kids books the Doctor wrote (they were being a bit meta there), and elsewhere it's just sort of referential. the Chinese translation of the tiotle, 'Mystery Doctor,' works better.

Why do all'yall refer to Daleks as plural when there is, at least at one moment in time and space, only one of them?

um...yeah, you'll figure that out.

And I noticed that the Reapers looked a fair amount like gravelings-- it's not a rp-off, it's an homage. ;)

An homage

Is that anything like an halibut (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pnq96W9jtuw)?

The first person to use the phrase 'Doctor Who?' was the Doctor himself, in The Cave of Skulls (the second-ever episode, directly after An Unearthly Child). Ian and Barbara still believe the Doctor to be a certain I.M. Foreman (given his granddaughter is using the surname 'Foreman' in class) at this point. Which, naturally, he's not, and he doesn't realise they think that's his name.

At one point, the Doctor and Ian are having a bit of a shout-off, and Ian refers to him as 'Doctor Foreman.' The reply is, 'Eh? Doctor who?'

Also occurs in An Unearthly Child.

To the best of my memory.

Can't remember for sure, but you're likely right.

It's basically a 45-year-old running joke. He goes "I'm the Doctor!" and whoever he's talking to goes "Doctor Who?" to which he replies, "Just the Doctor." It's the absolute silliest of silly titles.

Why do all'yall refer to Daleks as plural when there is, at least at one moment in time and space, only one of them?

This question tells me that you are not at the end of season 1 yet.

And is there ANYTHING these people won't rip off?

Absolutely not.

Yknow, during one of these ones I just saw when they kept going "WHO ARE YOU," I was expecting an Abbott and Costello riff.

But that wouldn't be cricket, now, would it?

When you get tired of 'WHO ARE YOU,' watch the 1996 TVM and cancel it out with a big dose of 'WHO AM I.'

I don't know that he is ever referred to specifically as "Doctor Who", except in that funny question that people ask after he introduces himself: "Who is he? The Doctor? Doctor Who?"

And you really, REALLY should check out the old stuff. SO GOOD. There are Daleks galore!

The very first show -- An Unearthly Child -- two teachers followed his granddaughter, Susan, home from the English school she was attending. The followed her to a junkyard, where she went into a police box. They went in and encountered a grumpy old guy who they assumed was her grandfather, whom she had told them was a doctor. They addressed him as "Dr. (assumed name of Susan)", and he snapped, "Dr. who?"
