Seemed like a good time for an update on things and stuff while waiting for my 300 emails to be responded to.

Eleanor had her orthopedist appointment yesterday. It turns out to have been an early and painful flareup of arthritis. The good news is, no invasive procedures. The bad news is, probably more of these will pop up now and again. Still, I'm glad she's back, more or less, to her usual smiling self.

Mine own bug has been behaving better the past few days- the primary remaining symptom can only be described as "duck calls," and no, you not want more information about that- but now the kid has come down with the respiratory thing. We dragged out her humidifier for perhaps the first time this century, and there's nothing like the cleaning job in advance of its use to remind me just how much mineral crap is in our notoriously hard tap water.

----

But what does this have to with Morse?, I hear you wonder.

Nothing, really, but there is a connection in the movie we watched a couple of nights ago.

On one of my recent visits to my sister, I saw she'd picked up a book by Steve Martin titled Shopgirl- more a novella than full-length work, but I brought it home, read it, and rather enjoyed it. I'd never heard of it being adapted for the screen, but we just watched LA Story the week before, and checking Martin's IMDB credits revealed that he had, indeed, adapted the book for the screen- and co-starred in it, along with Claire Danes as the title character.

If anything, the film is even sweeter and more fun than his original words would have let you expect. The most surprising thing out of the gate was the 1:46 length of the film, since I could probably have read the entire novella out loud in under 90 minutes. They added all kinds of levels of detail, and dialogue, and visuality to what was in the original work, and I have no idea why this film escaped my notice for so long.

Morse, I know, right. The Shopgirl soundtrack was composed and conducted by Barrington Pheloung, who did all of the amazing work for the Inspector Morse series all those years and does so now for its quasi-sequel of Lewis. He does not do a lot of Major Motion Picture work, so it was a treat to find this little extra diddlybit to enjoy in the whole process.

When I first saw the trailers for Shopgirl, my friends who were big Martin fans told me the novella was quite good. I bought it, and loved it. I liked the movie as well.

Glad Eleanor is feeling better. As one with arthritis, I can say it's a pain (pun intended), but each person learns the coping mechanisms that works for them (hot bath and Advil for me).

I loved Shopgirl. I would've never cast Claire Danes with Steve Martin, but it worked beautifully.
