Recall: Aromatherapy kits

-About 516,000 Spa Factory Aromatherapy Fountain & Bath Benefits Kits, made in China by JAKKS Pacific Inc. of Malibu, Calif., because pressure in the jars of Bath Bombs/Balls or Bath Fizzies can cause the caps on the jars to blow off, posing explosion and projectile hazards. The mixtures also can contain citric acid, which can get into the eyes during an explosion and pose a risk of eye irritation. The company and the Consumer Product Safety Commission have received 88 reports of exploding jars, including 13 injuries. Injuries to children include three cases of irritated eyes, two eye injuries from flying caps, a cheek welt and a cheek cut. Injuries to adults include four reports of bruising, one swollen joint and one face gash. The recall involves the purple caps on jars included in the products. The jars are used to make Bath Bombs/Balls and Bath Fizzies. The recalled products involve the item numbers 37836, 37908, 37837, 54892 and 54857. They were sold at Sam's Club, Wal-Mart, Target and toy stores nationwide from August 2008 through this month. For more information, consumers can visit http://www.myspafactory.com or http://www.cpsc.gov.

Emergency personnel were quick to reassure readers that Enya escaped from her exploding bathtub unharmed, and with all the scented candles safely extinguished.

Further down in the same recall roundup, we find this:

- About 8,400 Skull-And-Crossbones necklaces, made in China and imported by Spencer Gifts LLC of Egg Harbor Township, N.J., because the skull and metal clasp of the necklace contains high levels of lead, which is toxic if ingested by young children. No incidents or injuries have been reported. The products were sold at Spirit Halloween and Spencer Gift stores nationwide from November 2006 to December 2008. Details: by phone at 800-321-2497; by Web at http://www.cpsc.gov.

Note that no recall occurred from Hot Topic, where their "No Cutting Necessary" kits containing this product have been flying off the shelves.

I once made scented bath salts for my sister and packaged them in an old Grolsch beer bottle.

I took the bottle with me on the plane home.

She opened it, and a fountain of salt shot 2 feet into the air, on and one for a very long time.

Our hair was full of salt. We howled with laughter.
