It occurred to me weeks ago that, among the many transitions away from our nation's Eight Year Nightmare, we might need to have George Bush fixed in one other respect:

changing the final chorus of Avenue Q.

As recently as last August, and as far away as Canada, Dubya's appearance in this verse STILL got the biggest laugh and applause of the whole show:

Only for now (sex!)
Only for now (your hair!)
Only for now (George Bush!)
Is only for now!
Don't stress, relax,
Let life roll of your backs
Except for death and paying taxes,
Everything in life is only for now.
Each time you smile, it'll only last a while
Life may be scary, but it's only temporary.
Everything in life is only for now.

So I got to thinking that they might need to change that reference now. The Toronto show, at least, was very faithful to the original book, without any updates or local-colour references, so any change comes as a big deal.

Pity that they're making a change I can't believe in.

To its credit, the Q-continuum was right on top of this, and the producers announced a contest that ran for about a month beginning in early December. They got thousands of entries, some of which are summarized here, but finally narrowed it down to the four choices which will be worked into the New York show over the next few weeks.

The winners were:

"Recession!"
"Prop 8!"
"This show!"
"Your mother-in-law!"

To which I say, "Meh!" (But only for now.)

Come on, folks. The first and last one don't even scan. The only one that's even marginally political is the second one, but even for a New York show with a majorly gay component, the reference just strikes me as a little too narrow in place and time to be a forever lyric. The last one's just a stock Borscht Belt joke that has nothing to do with the show itself. Only the third works at all, and not in a way I'm happy about.

Would that they'd asked me, for I've been humming the REAL choice for months now: "FOX NEWS! is only for now." It captures the political nature of the line it replaces, and references a villain that is recognized and hated everywhere in and near this country, and that has been a scourge for at least as many years as He Who Must Not Be Emulated.

----

But hey. I'm prejudiced. What say you?

i think your mother in law is the funniest one, everyone married can identify with it, mostly everyone else understands the joke and i mean george bush didn't have much to do with the show either... i agree with you about prop 8 though, and i just don't like putting recession there...
