My wife starts a blog, and two days later, LiveJournal lays off more than half its employees.

The most frequently-sourced story about the putsch is here, and basically accuses the current Russian owners, and SixApart before that, and Founder Dude Brad earlier still, of fucking the whole place up by not letting it turn into Myspace.

Sorry, but as [livejournal.com profile] lj_groucho once said, I wouldn't want to belong to any club that has Myspace or Facebook as its basis for increasing the membership.

----

Needless to say, the Flist is all aTwitter about the implications. [livejournal.com profile] lisaofdoom gets the props for tipping me off to it earliest, and especially for reminding me that, um, if Frank eats the backup tapes, there'd be nothing left of the almost five years of my life I put down on those servers.

What, Me Backup?

Putting it off this long, until several million people bombed the open-source servers at once, was Bad Move Number One.

Bad Move Number Two:  Googling "livejournal backup" and downloading the first thing I saw. It looks benign enough, and has all kinds of current members who post, but the damn thing didn't work. As with most of the world's other problems including Gaza, I tend to blame Vista.

Then, [livejournal.com profile] cleolinda was nice enough to pimp the archiver she actually uses, and given her volume of commentary, anything she actually uses probably works, right? And it's open-source from sourceforge.net, the same lovely people who provide Semagic, which I just re-downloaded for myself last week and for Eleanor a coupla ago.

The products? Great. The price? Unbeebabull. The download interface, though? Sucks to be you.

Unfortunately, I'm not nearly enough of a geek to understand that hodgepodge of platform references and file extensions. Like most guys, though, I went with the bigger-is-better approach and chose the doc.zip one.... which proceeded to dump 310 Firefox html pages on my desktop and not a single piece of executable there or anywhere.

Some 310 deletions later, I went with the far smaller and simpler looking choice of a single .exe file (which is what that links to, so don't click it unless you mean business). Moments after that, I had both the entirety of this journal, and the much smaller nut of the baseball blog, in lovely preserved .lja files.

And so should you.

Someone pointed me at the program "ljarchive", and after some poking I'm all archived.

Crap anyway.

(ed) Ah, you've already got it.

The program keeps telling me that I need to set encoding at the bottom of my Edit Personal Information Page...WHAT? I can't find this. Help?

I have no idea what that means.

But this guy/gal does. (http://sageness.livejournal.com/1174102.html")

Click the link in that entry, which should bring you to some setting of some sort in your own account management. Change the drop-down option from "none" to the first option (Western European/Windows), and try again.

Believe it or not, I actually found it myself and fixed it. Thus proving there is a God.
