It's been a Maply-Leafy ending to oor first night of 2009.
Just now, we had the Sabres game on MSG from the ACC (demolishing the Leafs at last check), but with the sound off, instead listening to the melodic sounds of jazz from a Toronto FM station on the stereo as the skaters did their thing.
JazzFM, as it's known, is something of a cross-breed of commercial and public radio. They solicit memberships and have pledge drives like our NPR affiliates, but they also have full-fledged commercials (though fewer of them) rather than those thinly-disguised "underwriting opportunities" which US public stations have increasingly relied on.
Most of them are for jazz clubs, auto brands, and the irrepressible offerings of Bay-Bloor Radio, but this week, maybe because of the collapsing economy or just the Christmas week quietude, they've been running several for one of Ontario Province's many charitable lotteries.
Unlike here, where the State runs the only legal game in town (games, rather, literally dozens of them), Canada permits competition among various Worthy Causes for the gambling loonie. The one on JazzFM just now may be the most bizarre I've ever come across:
The site, and the commercial I heard, all highlight the faboo chances of winning you have with their lotto tickets:
You have to wonder, though, whether the whole thing is just a self-defeating proposition. By making the excitement of a big winning ticket so likely, aren't they just adding to the nightly occurrences of MI's and TIA's on the nightly Toronto Ambulance run?
.... All the more so tonight, when so much of Southern Ontario is coding over the Sabres actually scoring four goals in a game.... AND winning?
