First of all, O Hai! My Mets blog, and my reggular blog, have been ded like ded things since Monday, due to some bizarre Russian gang war, so I'll be cross-posting to this, and eventually backfilling the original Metphistopheles site, with entries from all this.  Until we get things back under control, I'll be linking to this blog's entries on Facebook and Google+ and invite your adds, your friends, your hits and hopefully no errors.

Events of the past couple days in Metsland have been about as sad. Wasn't it only last month we were seeing ads like this?

El Segundo is, alas, now no más.

I've seen blog posts suggesting parallels to The Shocker of '77. I reject them. M. Donald Asshole hadn't lost his nerve on account of bankruptcy issues beyond his control; the Payson fortune was quite nicely hanging in at the time. No, he was just determined to beat down an uppity white boy who dared to try cashing in on even a small piece of the Messersmith/McNally windfall. Maybe this is hindsight, but the damaged goods we got for Seaver seem far cheaper than the potential upside of this Wheeler fella. And having the trade come down during a four-game sweep of those same Cincinnati Reds seems a nice bit of karma.

It still hurts, especially as the Mets win and the Braves give up ground. I've lived through '69 and '73 and know how this team can work wonders in late August and September- especially with its remaining superstars either back in the lineup or at least on the mend.  I'd just hate to have a Mets-Giants series in October. THAT woulda-coulda-shoulda way too much, even for me.

Thanks to Greg and Jason for the Faith and Fear T that arrived last week. Electronic versions of The Book will be going out to the authors in the next few days, and this link may give anyone else a discount on buying it if you use it today or tomorrow; type "Mets Brand" into the search box and you should see our collection.
