Emily and I went to church this morning, my birthday well and truly ratted out in the bulletin and with the kid mentioning it in announcements, as well. Since she included the year (I'm 49), I got all sorts of "wait till next year" predictions about the Big One that lies ahead.
As Christ Himself likely said at one time or another (only in Aramaic), fuck that. I have no qualms about turning the odometer either today or a year from today. No, it's the Wednesday before my birthday I'm paying real queasy attention to.
Consider:
On the Wednesday before my birthday in 2000, I awoke to find a pretender on the throne, who thereafter spent the ensuing eight years shitting my country away.
On the Wednesday before my birthday in 2004, not only did that happen all over again, but I came to find out that my niece was experiencing severe post-partum trauma after the October birth of her second child, and my wife, sister and I spent the rest of that week traveling to and caring for her.
On the Wednesday before my birthday a year ago, that niece's father died. He shared a birthday with me, and I spent the day of that event at his wake.
Then, on the most recent Wednesday before this my most recent birthday, my computer died. That may have also been the day I swallowed a crown (not Bush's, thank God, but one of the ones in my mouth, a problem I will be spending much of tomorrow getting solved).
Thanks to those of you with kind wishes and e-cards and whatnot. For next year, though, think of me on the 4th, not the 9th, because that, apparently, is when I will really need the kind words and prayers.
