I'm about 95 percent back from the abyss of Wednesday morning's crash. Despite my unfortunate penchant for not making regular backups, I amazingly managed to save all of my email (love to Bill Gates for putting an auto-archive on Outlook, nut-crushing hate to him for making it so hard to transfer that auto-archived data onto a duplicate licensed copy of the thing); I figured out how to transfer all of my Firefox stuff to Barry with only a bit of aggravation; I got both of my specialty softwares transferred (although I did have to hack into my own legal copy of the billing program since I couldn't remember the serial number), losing only two weeks of timekeeping data and three actual sent bills in that program and losing Nothing At All of my bankruptcy data. I still have to track down Semagic, try transferring some Word templates and macros, but otherwise, I dodged major bulletry here.

----

Not to mention, I'm mobile again! And just in time for NaNo!

I have a grand total of zero words at the moment, but I've run the basic gist of my idea past a few people who'd know if it was running at Ludicrous Speed, and they say it's at least passibly plausible. If you've been in a university in, say, the past 5 years and want to give it your own sniff test, comment.

----

I've been using my old NaNo community to keep track of my books-read for this year, so I went in there today to update it and try to figure out a place to move it for the rest of this month. My goal of 50 for the year isn't looking good unless I start counting comic books, but for now, and for what it's worth, the list is here. I suppose 32 isn't pitiful, even if a good half dozen of them were baseball-related. The last of those, though, was pretty profound, and seeing as it was a reading copy I promised to do a review of, I'll be having more to say about it sometime later this month.

Oh, right! Nano! In all the craziness of the election and post-election depression (seriously, I spent Wednesday afternoon crying in my office), I totally forgot. I'll e-mail you today.

Love the Space Ball reference.

Our hard drive bit the big one back this summer, and I am hoping that we can salvage our pics. That is my great lament over the crash. Any suggestions?

If the drive itself really crashed, there's not much you can do. There are places that will attempt data recovery, but I found them to be expensive and less than successful.

Now, if the real culprit was something else on your system- the board, the processor, the power (I am familiar with all these steps from having ruled them in, out and out the other day), you may be able to do what I did. The hard drive itself is eminently removable, but with care. Then, you turn it into an external drive, using a kit like the one I bought for all of 15 bucks. It's a total No-Namo product, and you'll need a specific one based on the size of your old drive and the connector it needs to send output through a USB port (mine was a 2.5 inch- shut up- and an IDE connection, whatever that means). Here's a site which you can probably show somebody to get you what you need:

Once someone has recovered the drive and enclosed it, you just plug it into your existing puter through a USB port. Windows should recognize it as a mass storage drive and you should be able to see whatever files are on there.

If you need more help with this, holla.

Thank you! Bill successfully removed the hard drive, and now we will look for the kit with the appropriate setting. I'll holler if I need help! :D

Happy Early Birthday!

Or should I say, "Feliz Cumpleanos!" Haven't responded much lately because the internet is very slow in Honduras, but I'm still reading. :) Hope your day is fun and that the year is better.
