Ethics exam
Aug. 15th, 2008 09:54 pmSo here we are, moments before Michael Phelps's seventh medal attempt and, for most purposes, the crucial one of the octagon. (His eighth final, tomorrow, is as part of a medley event that the USA! USA! has never lost in Olympic competition.)
According to the reports I've heard, Phelps's main competition for Numero Siete tonight is one of his own teammates.
Hence the quandary.
Does Joe Anonymous try his best to defeat his teammate in his quest to out-Spitzer Spitz? Or does he act like a NASCAR teammate would, and devote most of his effort to splashing chlorinated water in the eyes of enemy swimmers in the hopes of getting them to crash?
Lawyers don't know anything about this sort of thing. The last lawyer to attempt a long-distance swim from the Caribbean to the Florida coast defied all expectations, when he managed to cut through the shark-infested waters like a hot knife through butter. Commentators even noted that the hungry carnivores seemed to be creating a wake in advance of his path to assist him in his effort.
Asked about it on arriving at Miami Beach, the aquatic attorney simply smiled and said,
Professional courtesy.
