Oh? You wanted actual answers?

Depending on how they're doing it, localising YouTube does three main things, namely:

  • it lets Google better deliver localised user interfaces and content for non-English speaking users, much like they do with localised search.

  • it improves access speeds for non-US users by providing access to content through Google's non-US data centres (again, much like they do for searching). Curiously, this also improves access speeds for US users.

  • It can help Google save on their bandwidth expenses by allowing the use of better intranational connections, and by saving on sending the same content across the same undersea cables quite as many times.

The US-localised version, in keeping with all current policies regarding cultural hegemony, is labelled "Global" in much the same way as you have a "World Series" without inviting any other countries.

Hey. We've been inviting Canada since 1969. Teams from that frozen wasteland (which is to say, within 10 miles of my front lawn) have actually won the thing twice. And without the potential for embarrassment coming from the Cubs hiring an outfielder named Fukodome.
