Call me next January. We'll eat cake.
Jan. 20th, 2008 06:18 pmThere've been numerous observances, around here and elsewhere, that today represents the beginning of the final year of You Know Who's reign of terror power.
That hasn't stopped any number of people from speculating about ways in which The Great Pretender might attempt to weasel his way into an extended term, using some kind of security-based pretense for his declaration of an "emergency."
I've heard many of those stories since 9/11, but today, for the first time, I became aware of a Conspiracy Guy story from 1934, in which, allegedly, an oligarchy of major US corporate interests hatched a plot, using disgruntled veterans from the First World War, to seize all significant power from Franklin Roosevelt.
Also allegedly, one of the participants in this planned coup was one Prescott Bush, father of 41 and grandfather of 43.
What whack-job website am I getting this from? Democratic Underground? The Scientologists?
Erm, would you believe the BBC?
That page contains this link to the Radio Four documentary programme on the so-called "Business Plot," aired last July. (Warning: that's a Real Audio file, and if you haven't upgraded to a recent version, it will drive you nucking futs as it tries to take over every audio application on your computer.)
It runs for about half an hour, but it definitely gives one pause about how willing the Bush family really is to go quietly into that good night if it doesn't like the quality of the voters' choices.
I may want to add swimming to my exercise regimen by this time next year, in case it's gonna take an unauthorized Niagara River crossing to get me safely into Canada.
