If I haven't pimped Amie Street here before, please for me to do so now. It's a music-download concept so simple, none of the behemoths have thought of it yet: prices vary with the popularity of the track, often beginning at FREE, and going up from there. And what you buy is pure, unrestricted mp3 trackage with none of those hideous DRM bugs crawling all over them.

I was turned on to this source by the ever-thoughtful Friend that is [livejournal.com profile] roguepuppet, who this morning linked to a whole collection of just-released Free Stuff on Amie Street in the comedy category. Lots of old bits from Jonathan Winters, Shelly Berman and Phyllis Diller, but I headed straight for the Star Trek humor and claimed a free copy of "Do the Picard." The downloader asked me, "would you like to buy the entire album for $FREE?" and displayed a tracklist including several of my all-time favorite Trek spoofs including "Star Drek" and The Firm's toe-tappin' "Star Trekkin'," which we only quote around here at least two or three times a week checking out detritus ("It's life, Jim, but not as we know it,....").

I had some grief with using Firefox to complete the transaction, but Nan promises that it can be done, still for free, from this link to the Dr. Demento material accessible on the site.

So go. Ye canna change the laws of physics, but the laws of economics are a-changin:)

always starts free...

actually... ALL songs on Amie Street start for free.. even stuff from Famous People. The max a song will go to is .98 cents. And you can earn credits towards buying more music by recommending songs on the site. ( make a rec)
Nope, I do not personally know anyone who works there, or have a stake in the company ( although I have been emailing back and forth with them enough over the last few months that the crew who is building the site is starting to feel like friends). I have also had great response to bug reports 9 some fixed in as little as 20 minutes.. so if you see something bad or annoying- give em some feedback and tell them roguepuppet sent you ;-)
Another thing I love about the site is that you can buy a song while it is still free ( maybe on your coffee break or something) and then come back hours or days later and download it.. as many times as you want. Or just not download it at all and play it over the internet to listen, if you are traveling. Have a hotel with highspeed access and a laptop? You now have access to your entire AmieStreet library... coolness.
Anyway... go... off with you.. discover more wonderfulness and report back.

Tried registering (using IE) and it didn't like me. No matter what I entered for Username it popped up a funny box saying "username must be between 5 and 25 characters long." Um, well. "sturgeonslawyer" is 16, and if I'm not mistaken, that's between 5 and 25. Several others got the same weird effect.

Firefox on the other hand had no problem registering.

Ooooh.... lots of Jonathan Winters.
