Band geek special
Jul. 18th, 2007 07:06 amIt would appear that half the Internet is out at the moment- the left speaker, I think- so I'll have to trouble you with that's on hand. Since I know I have at least a half dozen unadulterated current or former band nerds here (and if that sounds cruel, it isn't- we were called worse), I thought I'd share a site that seems heaven made for you and me.
The background of this entry comes from four nights ago, when the Mets honored their longtime broadcaster Ralph Kiner before the evening's game. You can't get any longertime than Ralph: he was in the booth for the first game in the first season, 1962, and he's in it, at least at home games, usually a few innings a week even today. The booth is named for the guy. I wasn't at the game (didn't even watch, sad to say), but if you want to read a tribute from someone who was, you can go here (assuming they've jiggled the speaker wire back in) and you will be moved by some part of it even if you have no idea who we're talking about.
Or we can just get to the band music part. Right. Gotcha.
That tribute piece mentions a piece of march music which Ralph used for decades as the theme of his Met post-game show: Franz von Blon's "Flag of Victory March." And even though I hadn't heard it in decades, it immediately went into my cranium and has been there ever since. Still, I wanted to hear it properly, so I googled it. Some Met fans had found a link to an .mp3 of it some time back; sadly, the link was outdated.
But the site wasn't, and on it, I found not only Ralph's march in all its audio glory, but a veritable smorgasbord of old band pieces, in their entirety and all beautifully .mp3able:

I'm sure I played some of these. If you've worn the black pants and spats, I'm even more certain you have.
Go. Pig out.
