As any quick scan of my past holiday-weekend entries would verify, these occasions bring out more than their share of trouble in two departments: health and household plumbing. No, there haven't been any major disasters on either front this year, but the minor annoyances have at least kept with the spirit of past events.

Other than some bothersome leftover stuffiness from the previous week's bout with Teh Sick, I've really felt quite good the past few days- until 6 this morning. My right knee has been giving me trouble ever since the animals got me up for their "Memorial Day Shemorial Day" regular morning feeding.  I have no recollection of doing anything to cause it, and I even seem to remember being up at some earlier point during the night without pain. There's no history of pain or trauma down there, so this remains an unsolved mystery for the moment.

As for the plumbing, again, just a minor incident on the list. We're year-round outdoor grillers; even in the dead of winter there's a path shoveled out to the grill, and Eleanor brought home the traditional first-weekend-of-summer pack of hot dogs to mark the occasion of this weekend. The grill, for its part, chose last night at 7 p.m. to announce that the propane cylinder was empty. So I trekked off today for a replacement and we should be good until, probably, Labor Day. Or Christmas. Or whatever.

Charles Nelson Reilly 1931-2007

To an entire generation, at least, he provided a five-times-weekly illustration of what "openly gay" meant.  And he was unabashed enough about it that I don't think he'll mind this one joke on the occasion of his passing, which came into my head within about an hour of learning of it:

I dreamed that Charles Nelson Reilly had already risen from his grave and begun his new life as a vampire, thus leading to the first reported midnight sighting of a hemosexual.

Right. Back to being and nothingness.

Ha! One propane tank lasts you 6 months??? And you call yourselves "year-round grillers"! Matt's gone through at least 21/2 tanks already and we've been here just 10 months with that one month we weren't here. I made him get a backup tank though after he ran out of gas right before we were about to cook something. Glad yall are grillers though. :-)

Y'know, to me Charles Nelson Reilly will always be Captain Gregg's pitiful great-nephew.

I LOVED CNR on "Match Game" and "Hollywood Squares." I was too young to know what "gay" was, but I knew he was a hoot!

Glad Teh Sick is over the the grill is full!
