It's one thing to be surrounded by idiots, but it's quite another when they suck up every available air molecule and suffocate all the other residents of the village.

Thus it was, early this afternoon, when a British Friend's post heralded the sad news of the death of Ian Richardson. My icon for this post recalls his portrayal of the fictional, Ruthless (his wife's name was Elizabeth) British prime minister in the House of Cards trilogy, one which I was raving over just a week ago.

It saddened me that I had not come across this news through more conventional channels, and thus I clicked the Google News "entertainment" tab to see where this legendary Shakespearean actor's passing might be ranked among the star news of the day.

Answer: left in the dust by virtually the same fetish parade of stories that's up there now, including, and in order:

Anna Nicole this (2,173 stories)

Anna Nicole that (1,184 more)

Cartoon Network exec quits over Al-Milkshake terror scare (726)

Eddie Murphy acting like an ass, and not in another Shrek sequel (251)

Borat 2: Electric Boogistan (132)

James Brown's something-or-other allowed back in da house (251)

Metal Gear movie (51)

And at least three other "Anna Nicole the other thing" sets of stories (ranges from 47 to 233 more sources), Ryan O'Neal's possible arrest (631 of those), assorted film reviews (hundreds), puff pieces about Grammy contestants and the Police reunion (hundreds more), and ending with, not the loss of a gentleman performer but.... with news that Kim Kardashian's upcoming sex tape will not, repeat not, contain the infamous "water sports" scene.

It's enough to make me want to drown in my own.... sorrows, yeah, that's it.

Since we're all desperately in need of some culchuh right now, may I present just what is needed, from three of the most famous of our history's musically gifted knights: Sir W.S. Gilbert (1836-1911), Sir A.S. Sullivan (1842-1900), and Sir M.A. Lot (1963-present):

(Thank you so much, Lisa. I desperately needed that right about now:)

Unfortunately, Mr Richardson did not have a triple E bust, a long history of apprearing sky-high on ____, nor was he involved in a three-way paternity suit. He was just an excellent actor, which doesn't cut it in the media these days. Love Gilbert and Sullivan.

Oh, I forgot to mention...there is a comedy team, darned if I can remember the name of it, that sings "Baby Got Back" and other rap "songs" in babershop quartet harmony. Hilarious. I enjoyed the vid.
