I've stayed remarkably silent about the whole business from last week about Hillary declaring for the nomination. I'm still undecided about the question of whether she's unelectable (and no, defeating two marginal U.S. Senate candidates I can't even name doesn't prove that), I'm worried about how chameleon-like some of her positions seem to be, and I'm annoyed that she didn't give the voters of her ::koff:: own state the courtesy of telling us she was gonna do this before running for a second Senate term. (I mean, c'mon, Hil. We re-elected Alan Fucking Hevesi over a credible opponent. You would've still kicked the ass of Schneider from One Day at a Time or whoever it was you were running against.)

And yet I shall keep my counsel about her, at least for now. Frankly, I'm more worried about Bill. He's the one with the track record, the established public hate, the one whose misdeeds will be all over the tabloids and talk shows, be they past or (hopefully not) future. Having already beaten Obama to the distinction of being America's first black President (dubbed that by nobody less than Toni Morrison), we now have to contemplate the significance of his possible ascension into history as America's first male First Lady.

Contemplate away.

:usual caveat re knowledge of US politics:

IMHO, Hilary is unelectable. There was a big article on her in the Times this week and from the looks of things, there's just too much ammo in her past for the Republicans to use - Bill being a shagger, her liberal views on abortion, her beyond-the-usual First Lady intrusion into politics re healthcare, her support of the Iraq invasion etc etc. There is simply no way that she will be able to play to the Bible Belt and that's what she needs to carry in order to win.

I've also got my doubts about Obama's electability. He seems to be doing a good job of being open about his past and upbringing (which will help offset the inevitable - HE'S A BLACK, MUSLIM EXTEMIST!!111!!! negative campaigning). He comes across pretty well in interviews and he seems to have a way with ordinary people. But (and I hate to say this), I'm not sure that the US is ready for a black President, any more than it's ready for a woman president. My inner cynic suggests he'd win the 'Anyone But Hilary' campaign, but whether he's got the stomach for the nastiness of a proper presidential campaign is up in the air.

PS - women leaders are sooooooo 1979. Teehee.

I retain just enough nobility about the hearts and minds of my fellow voters to believe we might, just might, overcome one of these historical obstacles if one or the other of them ran a perfect campaign, and preferably was up against an idiot even more blithering than the one who just got elected (allegedly) two times running. We did, after all, at least get over the Catholic obstacle in 1960. Don't worry, though. My nobility rarely lasts long.

Interesting, your mention of Maggie at the end there. I just finished rewatching The Final Cut, third in the Beeb's House of Cards trilogy with Ian Richardson, which famously begins with Maggie going paws-up into the ground. You might think Hillary is a tin-plated dictator with delusions of godhood. I couldn't possibly comment. (If you've never seen these, do go. Sadly, in this country Richardson is best known for being the rich guy in the Grey Poupon commercials. I think that thought just consumed the last of my nobility about my fellow electorate.)

And to save you an emailed comment: I was smiling this morning to see you'd rescued DB from its doldrums of the other night. I would have severely hugged you on the wrong side of the road had you enabled comments on that, and I was glad to see it was one of those passing things we all get about our writings at times.

Chin up. It doesn't really matter because (♥) Eliot would get to appoint the replacement. It's not like we'd be forfeiting the seat with Pataki.

Who do you think he'd pick?

Personally, I think Tom Suozzi would be a kickass choice, but the flying pigs are telling me it'd be some Shelly-appointed hack, if not Shelly himself.

I would cry if he appointed stupid Rico Suozzi to the position. >:(

Even though I would probably vote for her (I agreed with most of her voting record during her first term as senator), I do have doubts as to whether she's electable at all. I don't like to bring her up with most people because I've run into a few that hate her with a passion.
So can anyone in this forum tell me why people seem so hellbent on a witch hunt at the mere mention of her name? I know she's been involved in a couple of financial scandals in her past, right? I didn't pay too much attention to current events back then (welll duh, except for the huge mess Bill made, that was unavoidable).
But what makes her so "hate-able" to a significant portion of the population?

I'm sad to say this, but I think much of it came from her daring to break the traditional First Lady mode of just baking cookies, running charity balls, making meaningless speeches about world peace and putting her brain in a freezer for the full four-year term. You know, like Laura does.

Funny how nobody dissed Nancy Reagan for being an assertive power broker. She just did it quietly enough not to be noticed. I'd also be interested to see how, if a conservative woman ever gets the nod, what the expectations of her husband would be.

Are you for serious? That's a damn shame. I suspected as much, but I thought people would have better reasons than that.
My roommate, who otherwise is a perfectly nice and very smart and reasonable girl, is a republican and happens to harbor one of those "ANYONE BUT HILLARY!!!!!" attitudes. We're able to live together because we understand that people are entitled to their own opinions and it's damn near impossible to change them, so we're not even going to try.
If the subject ever happens to come up again though, I'll definitely ask her what the reason for all the disdain is and get a first hand answer. Of course I'll respect her viewpoint and not try to change her mind, this is purely out of curiosity. Once I get results from the field though, I'll report back here as to why a known reasonable person would hate Hillary.

And yes, Laura is totally creepy. It sends chills up my spine every time I see that vacuous face of hers with the plastered on smile. Really. Is there a soul behind that facade? I'm starting to think my "Disney planted animatronic robots in the white house" theory is more valid than I originally thought.

I just have to say thank you for giving me, as usual, yet another reason to smile this morning.

And I'm feelin' smug because I recognize the source of "the Richard Nixon Dumbwaiter."

You know, I presume, the story about That Day in November 1963 -- Lenny Bruce was told that Kennedy had been assassinated, and the first words out of his mouth were, "Well, there goes Vaughan Meader's career..."

Pwned:)

As I was typing that line, I knew, I even muttered, "Dan'l will recognize that."

The Mars joke is also on that album- during the press conference skit. I think when "Kennedy" was asked when NASA would be ready for a Mars shot, he answered something like, "Whenever Senator Goldwater is ready to leave."

You crack me up. In all seriousness, Hillary being elected is just below nuclear holocaust and spiders on my list of things I fear.
