Quite the day for things going bump on the computer. If you see two voice posts immediately behind this one, they're part of this story. Here goes.

I did manage to get one DVR recording of the Daily-Colbert dynamic duo from the other night- and promptly found myself utterly incapable of making another copy.  Turns out my CD-RW/DVD-play drive does not record DVD's; formatted or no, the disks show up on here as nonexistent.

This led to several plans, running more or less simultaneously:

First thought was to connect my PC to the TV or DVR, using the puter's DVD player as the source for the DVR to record.  First, I failed at numerous efforts to get the connection at all, leading to the inevitable Radio Shack pilgrimage for an S-video cable and a earphone-RCA audio splitter. Still nothing.

Once again, though, it turns out that a crucial port- in this case, the S-video out on the PC- was pre-set in the off position at the factory, requiring a series of steps to enable it right out of Arthur Dent's search for the plans for the bypass. This found, I saw my display reappear before my eyes on the Big Screen, turned on the DVD, and.... nothing.  Blank screen in WinDVD, same in Media Player.  So even unprotected disks can't be played through the TV-DVD, much less recorded through it.  Shite.

If you can't raise the signal, you need to change the source. And there was the dear soul [livejournal.com profile] shappyshaps to help out with a beautiful clean commercial-free download of the entire Colbert broadcast.

Which, as you might expect, wouldn't play.  It was an .avi file format which Media Player couldn't read the "codec" on, and which QuickTime refused to believe even existed.

So back to the well I went- the well-trained Friend who got me the download in the first place- who now also got me the software that would both play it and assist in screencapping it.  I can now send recordable disks of the show to my guest, along with the software to play it and,...

I also have these lovely mementoes of the evening:

So thank you again, Annie and May and all of you for egging on our 2 seconds of fame. And if anyone else wants the download, I have a link I can send.  I think.
