As we know from the Vice Presidency of J. Danforth Quayle, a mind is a terrible thing.  As I get older, I can relate more and more to this.

We have two cabinets hanging in our kitchen. Inside, they hold aquarium products and assorted diddlybits, but on top, they belong to Eleanor's collection of cookbooks.  These are constantly being used, replaced and reorganized, and this morning, for the second time in recent memory, this one wound up at the outer edge of the stack facing out as you walk by that cabinet:

I cannot explain why, but. When I look at that cover head-on, I see what you see: the title in an oval, with a mixing bowl above it partly taken up by what is probably an artichoke heart.

And yet. Every morning back when it was on the end, and again this morning, when I passed it from an angle, my brain registered a fully functional picture of Lucy Van Pelt.

Yeah, her. The oval is her face, the artichoke her hair, and the space in the bowl behind the artichoke becomes the ear. I can't say I see the football being pulled back, but I suspect that's just a psychological filling-in-the-blank effect.

Anyone who sees this, or can explain why I'm seeing it, is encouraged to reply. I'll even pay the standard five cents for it.

Now that you drew the picture for me, I can't *not* see it.

The weird thing, though? I CAN''T see it in that picture, no matter how long I look at it. It's only when it catches me from that odd out-the-door angle, when I'm not even looking, that she gets me. Yet she always does.
