I'm roughly halfway to my academic conference debut tomorrow morning. Also, I am very, VERY lucky I have a place to stay tomorrow and Friday nights.

One of the affiliated hotels to the university for conferences and such is the La Quinta Inn in Garden City, New York. Or, as it's known to anyone who has heard this segment of This American Life, "thee La Keeenta Een en Harden Ceety, Nueva York."

Hofstra said to refer them to a university "tier" rate they'd negotiated for attendees, but they didn't provide anything of a coupon code to enter at online checkin, so I called the hotel directly.  At its local number. En Garden Ceety, Nueva York. I didn't even need to ask for the university tier rate, because they quoted me a better one. So, yeah. Boorlington, Vermonte is riiiight across the street from central Long Island.

I called back, now realizing that the voice mail tree at the local hotel pointed reservation requests right off to their nationwide service.  They quickly admitted that the code for Boorlington is one digit off from the one for Harden Ceety, and that's how I got misplaced. What they did not do, though, was honor the Boorlington price, which is not surprising, since the one I'm going to had exactly one room left....

and it's mine, I tell you. Mine! Go go go! MINE MINE MINE!

I did get the Tier One rate, though, so there's that.

Stay tuned. If they've overbooked, I may wind up in Boorlington yet.
