Oh no they didn't!:

Further proof that CBS’ in-the-works Sherlock Holmes reboot will take the iconic franchise in a radical new direction: The network has cast Lucy Liu as Watson!

TVLine has learned that Liu has been tapped to play Watson to Jonny Lee Miller‘s Sherlock in Elementary, the network’s modern-day take on the famed detective saga.

Another key change: Sherlock and Watson now live in New York City.

Because, yeah. It's not like anybody else has thought of a modern-day reboot. And New York works just as well in crime dramas as London does; just ask the Prime Suspect people about that.

At least it's on CBS, so we can get some David Caruso crossovers:

I'm going back to bed now. Dreams can't possibly be any worse.

As much as I like looking at Lucy Liu and am glad she's getting work again...

...no.

There...are so many ways in which that casting can go wrong. Liu a good actor and I'm always happy to see a network casting non-Caucasians, but, one of Watson's main functions is as the person continually telling Holmes he's brilliant. In Auntie's iteration that's tempered by the fact that John is also continually telling Sherlock when he's being a jerk and not letting him get away with it, but I'm rather concerned the CBS version would/will slip into a stereotype of the female supporter/dogsbody/admirer of the male genius. This is only made worse when the female is East Asian and the male is Caucasian. Not to mention that a US version would likely fall into the 'unrequited love' trap (and, indeed, that might have been a motivating factor to a female Watson, in addition to the rather idiotic notion that one must always have a supermodel-type in order to get viewers and thinking that female viewers will only respond to/identify with female characters, which is bollocks and I have statistics to support that).

Right. So...I'm glad I'll be sticking with Auntie Beeb.

I would've much preferred, say, Lucy Lawless as Irene. Someone to kick the misogyny right out of him.

As the prior commenter (and your fellow CP fan) said, Watson is that, plus a fair piece of Sherlock-enabling; but adding the gender angle to the formula really runs the risk of ruining it.

I honestly don't remember the Brit they cast as their US'ian version of Sherlock, even though he was in a season of Dexter. That alone doesn't bode well for the reboot.
