captainsblog: (Dr Teeth)
Routine dental cleaning today.... or so I thought.  Some obvious-under-light sightings by the hygienist led to an unscheduled x-ray and then a visit from the Dr. Dentist himself. An upper left crown he put in some years ago, and then refit last year when it broke off cleanly (and fortunately for explorers was not swallowed), is now covering up an abscessing post- one that has deserted Ray's Army and is well on its way to going over to the other side.

There's no pain, but that could begin tonight, next month, but probably won't hold off until next year. The options at this point are for him to pull it and leave a(nother) hole in my head, or move me along into the wonderful world of implants. Despite a lifetime of bad teeth and almost three decades of neglect up until going into Ron's care in my late 20s, I've thus far kept things to my original issue equipment, an infinite number of monkeys  fillings, and several crowns.  This would be my first foray into total Artificial Inteeth-igence.

I have dental insurance, but it's basically crap. They consider the $250 extraction to be "major restorative." Depending on their definitions and exclusions, it will likely fall into either pre-existing to before the crown went on, or hit my annual or lifetime maximums- you know, all the bad shit Obamacare got rid of for everything not involving your mouth, eyesight or brainpan.

They've submitted preapproval paperwork to Excellus, just so we can see what, if anything, might be covered. Even if all they do is knock the price down, that would be worth something. In theory, I could go with the traditional Dr. Howard-Dr.Fine-Dr. Howard procedure-

- and add the pretties later. Maybe more than one at the same time, since there are probably more waiting to crash and burn in the near future.

That was most of my day in Rochester. I had a court call that I did from here before getting on the road, and then a client appointment not far from the dentist before getting back home.  On the way from the latter to the 490, I passed this on the side of a pet store:

Pity THAT's doomed to be canceled:P

Better luck with pets awaited  once I got home. Eleanor continued work on the bathroom while I was out, removing the ancient and cracked-glass-doored medicine chest that hadn't been updated in my lifetime.  The replacement will require some drywalling, and a friend recommended somebody local who came to the house this afternoon to check it out. For a quite reasonable price and turnaround, he will fill all needed gaps where the current medicine chest hole is and the equally ancient laundry chute is in similar need of covering over. To make his job easier, I took Pepper on walkies as soon as he got here.

I've been trying to mix up the doggo’s walking routine. I missed a morning with her last week so I gave her a makeup walk in the afternoon. It’s warmer, there are more people and other pups out, there’s no rush to get home in time to go to work, and she’s discovering a whole new vineyard of smells of other dogs.

Plus you can see all of the signs of spring coming out on the front lawns. Sprouting flowers and rolling pins....

But no teeth out near the curb.  Yet.
