* Get all better. Yup, I'm about ready to register this thing to vote. It IS better, down to a minor nuisance except at some inconvenient times. During workouts, for one. And while misery doesn't particularly love company (particularly when it's coughing back at you), it's kinda comforting to hear that lots of people have this, from here to Albany down to Joisey. We're forming our own version of Orphan Black fannery- Cough Club. I also reported that I'm so goddam sick of this persistent cough, it's gotten to the point that I start unleashing a stream of curses after each coughing jag. I told Eleanor that I want credit for discovering a new disease:

Bronchial Tourette's #coughcoughFUCK

* Go out and run five miles. It's That Day in these parts: the oldest road race in the nation, the YMCA Turkey Trot, which has been officially and continuously run on Buffalo's streets since 1897 (and, at least by one account, unofficially in 1889). While a relatively few Veddy Serrrious Runners compete for 20ish-minute times and prizes, most of the 14,000 in the field are there to get some pre-food-coma air, people (or dinosaur) watch, and drink beer before 11 in the morning after (and often on) the course. I've signed up for it every year since 2012, made it to the start and finish lines every one of those years but one, and registered in plenty of time to make the annual appearance this time, too.

But didn't. Hey, least I didn’t oversleep. Had the packet, threw on the gear, and headed out with the dog for brief walkies and executive decision time around 8:30:

Cough? Yep, still there.
Weather? Raw, just over raining, still windy, and cold- I’ve run the Trot when it was under 15F, but today wasn’t cold enough to light the proverbial match under my ass.
Crew? None. I’d have taken the dog if I had a ride back to the Y.
Motivation? Thought I could break a 12 minute mile for the first time and finish under an hour. (Recent treadmill improvements have suggested the possibility.) No way, given all of the above.
So I wished the other Turkeys a good and fun run. Meanwhile, I’ve already tied my PR for this thing:

* Work a full week. I shut it all down around 3 yesterday. No travel this week, but plenty packed into those days, including a marvelously frustrating court (non-)appearance yesterday where the judge started micromanaging the case the day before I was scheduled to show up and refused to even allow something the other side had agreed to. Also, the past week or so have brought out an onslaught of procrastinators. I probably have a dozen open files where someone has consulted with me about bankruptcy, signed the retainer documents, paid all or some of the fee (except the clients on prepaid plans who don't have to pay upfront), and then disappeared. Some for weeks, some for months (I have a few going on a year or more, at least one of whom completely forgot about me and filed a case with another lawyer after paying me to do it). At least six of them have emerged from various thicknesses of woodwork since early last week, and they need their cases filed. Some need them NOW, sooner if possible. So far, I've got one filed, two sitting on my desk awaiting final completion of various things- and this doesn't count the call I got Monday from someone who was triaged and got to jump the queue. For today, that's all I have to say (or do) about them. Tomorrow, when Eleanor's at work, I'll probably dig into the pile some just so next week doesn't turn into a total tire fire.

Oh, and speaking of which,...

* Put my damn snow tires on. Like I said two weeks ago I had to do. At least we've only had the one long-gone snow, and at least now I have an appointment for it. Tuesday, the one workday this week I didn't have court or appointments, I drove up to my mechanic to make the appointment for this time next week. That will also cover the annual inspection and, hopefully, the final clearance of the air-pump idiot light that's been on for months. Mercedes wants to charge me $600 for a replacement part; I've found at least similar ones online for $75, and our regular mechanic will put it in if I bring it. Meanwhile, our friends' car is STILL in the shop after the unfortunate Bambi encounter mentioned in that link above. They haven't even made the final call on whether they're going to do the repair until they go digging into the wreckage.

And finally,....

* Host a poetry series.

Almost before we got home from meeting with the owners of the place I mentioned last time, we realized we had to do some checking about some things. For one, Eleanor heard from some people involved in it long-and-recent past, and their stories about the place and the people were a mixed bag of optimism and caution. Meanwhile, my Off-Duty Lawyer sign flickered on and off while the owners were describing the circumstances of the current management's acquisition of control of the place. I did some checking, and more questions got raised. Finally, the onslaught of my own worklife came back to haunt me in the past week, and I began to have serious concerns about whether I could keep a commitment to do this every other Wednesday night for the foreseeable future. So Eleanor and I talked, and then I made the call yesterday to tell Rino we were begging out. I also told him about my Nonna My Business Lawyer concern, and he assured me it was a known and resolved issue; I was glad to learn that, but it's the kind of thing that I am always likely to do. On the bright side, when I posted about us deciding not to take on the hosting duties, a friend contacted me wanting to know if HE could get involved doing it. So I will head down there next Wednesday, to see if anyone is there, anyone is doing it, and if they could use his help with it.

What WILL I do? Listen to Alice's Restaurant on WCMF like I always do; pop in and out of the Bills game this afternoon; eat; drink; watch; hopefully finally get over this damn thing. And if Pepper brings a boyfriend for Thanksgiving dinner, keep him away from the table;)
