That saying is one we often invoke to clients who have unrealistic expectations and try to overreach in their actions or negotiations.  It applies with delicious fabulousness today, to the bigots of Indiana and their overlords who couldn't leave well enough alone and, now, have come out of the Homophobic Bigotry Restoration Act debacle worse than they were when they started:

Indiana Republicans announced changes to the controversial Religious Freedom Restoration Act on Thursday. Language added to the bill will specifically prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity, lawmakers said.

“What was intended as a message of inclusion of all religious beliefs was interpreted as a message of exclusion, especially for the LGBT community," said House Speaker Brian Bosma. "Nothing could have been further from the truth, but it was clear that the perception had to be addressed.
"We are sorry that misinterpretation hurt so many people," Bosma added later.

"For the first time ever, the words 'sexual orientation' and 'gender identity' appear in an Indiana statute - or they will after this law is passed - in the context of nondiscrimination," said former Indianapolis Mayor and Eli Lilly exec Bart Peterson.

The noise machine is freaking out, dropping "bully" bombs on supporters of equality and continuing their talking-point crap about how we should all just move along, nothing to see here.  Take Tony "I'm Worse Than Norman Bates But Didn't Play Him" Perkins, who is just floored by the surrender of corporate and legislative America.  He continues to spout the fiction that Indiana's soon-to-be-amended law is "a perfectly reasonable religious liberty bill that is almost identical to one heralded by Bill Clinton."  (No, it's not- and in addition to all the things I noticed about it, comparing them side-by-side, the Times caught one thing I missed: Indiana's RFRA "grants parties the right to bring legal action to prevent a 'likely' burden on religious belief, even before any burden is imposed." That's a major expansion of the concepts of standing and justiciability that you wouldn't expect from a side that opposes "judicial activism" except when it's Nino Scalia actively doing its bidding.)

Even madder is RedState bigot Erick "I'm Not A Viking But I Like The Horny Helmet" Erickson, whose condemnation of the Hoosier backsliders tells them that, no, discrimination against them homos is NOTHING like that discrimination against them Negros that we USED to do:

One does not need a rainbow sticker on the back of their car to let people know they’re black. Or Asian. Or a Woman. The struggle for equality and civil rights between genders and races is inherently and objectively different from the gay rights movement. It is also why the gay rights movement is so invested in arguing that gender, though not sexuality, is a choice....[The] gay rights movement silences dissent to establish legitimacy in their quest for normalcy. The Stonewall riots are their Selma. Pay no attention to the lack of dogs in the street, poll taxes at the voting booth, and “heterosexual only” water fountains.

Asked to comment on that last point, Matthew Shepard had nothing to say. Because he was beaten, tortured, tied to a fence and murdered on account of who and what he was. Funny how nobody on that side wants to remember that, especially this week, when the hypocrites honor the death of their Savior who was beaten, tortured, tied to a cross and murdered on account of who and what HE was.

ETA.Late today, the Indiana Lej passed, and Pence quickly signed, the amended legislation, despite OM-NOM-NOM and the Fuckwad Research Council urging their Christian Soldiers in Indianapolis to keep their fresh new bigotry just the way it was originally. Somehow, any threats of Church Ladies and Klansmen boycotting the Final Four just don't have the same fear factor as when George Takei proposes it:)
