Mercury must've been retrograde today. Only explanation I have for an 8-5 workday of utter futility.

At least I talked the kid out of something that would've knocked Mercury into the sun. Relative-ly speaking.

Meanwhile, Eleanor's gotten me hooked on a Pulitzer-winning novel that's wonderful but long and intense. And totally apropos of nothing, I have to remember to remind her that somebody else has just recently trawled the same literary territory:

Set on a single day in the Dutch Golden Age, this engrossing historical novel brilliantly imagines the complex story behind one of Rembrandt's most famous paintings.

I'm not far along enough in The Goldfinch to know if this painting is significant to the result, but the coincidence of this book just coming out (and being reviewed in this week's New Yorker) is too much to pass up.

Sleep, on the other hand, can't be passed up either at this point. So, as the triumphantly-returned Cecil said to me earlier: Good night, Live Journal.... good nighhhhhhttttt......
