captainsblog: (Sherlock)
My day began with a dream which basically created the character of Sherspock- in the Trek universe, for certain, but with Holmes's deductive (and, I think, disguise) capabilities).  On waking, I immediately googled this to see if it had already been done. Of course it had:

"His Last Vow," the final of the BBC third series, is "in progress," as we say. I shall maintain radio silence on the specifics of the entire series until it's had its PBS run, but I'm definitely looking forward to it.  Meanwhile, on this side of the pond, I've gotten through the first three episodes of Elementary, the series I was so looking forward to loving to hate, and it's really nicely done so far. Miller's Sherlock owes plenty to BC's- the manic disposition, utter antisocial personality and precociousness aren't anything I recall from the original canon, or from the Jeremy Brett version I cut my teeth on.  Both use the endless streams of data, the bulletin boards pasted with clues, the odd surroundings of their old-school buildings (be they beehives or body parts).  Their Watsons are very different, yet each works with their respective hero; I like how Gatiss/Moff's John and Doherty's Joan came from clouded and possibly PTSD backgrounds, with each learning how to live again either because of, or more likely in spite of, being in the intense presence of one of the most difficult personalities on the planet.

Gregson's spin on Gregory Lestrade is neutral for me so far; he hasn't grown beyond the canonical/Brett series uselessness as he has in the current Sherlock series. It's Bell I find more intriguing; not only can I not match his (AC)DNA to a specific character, his last name (and ethnicity) match that of Beth Childs's partner in Orphan Black, so I'm getting echoes of that in this arc on top of everything else.

Elementary's third ep also introduced a serial killer, with distinct parallels to Dexter- from the daily box of donuts to the fresh-faced yet deadly demeanor of the suspect.  Although I haven't checked (and please don't tell me if I'm right), I wouldn't be at all surprised if Adam returns later in the Eve-ning of this show's arc.

All in all, a good day to watch other people (probably) die.  Tomorrow is the first of three Rochester trips, two of them in Emily's car, with her new car radio going in on the in-between day.  Think that will be tiring? No shit, Sh.....
