captainsblog: (Running man)
That is spelled correctly. Remember Zola Budd? She was a long-distance runner in the early 80s, whose 15 minutes of fame in the 1984 Olympics actually clocked in at 8 minutes and 48 seconds during the 3000 meter event, where she famously collided with her chief U.S. competitor Mary Decker, knocking the latter out of the race and ultlimately costing her a medal finish of her own that year.

I remember that fact far better than many more pressing ones- like what time court is and what's in my gym bag. And that is why she's mentioned here,  because she was most famous, back in the day, for running barefoot.

Today promised to be a long one for me, and thus far it's delivered. Court was scheduled for 9:30 in Rochester, I was up almost continuously since soon past 3 a.m. (wakies and dogs, mostly the cause), and by 8, everything for work was packed and I'd secured a "travel pass" so I could go to the local gym affiliate for cardio during my afternoon-long layover.

In the hallway of the courthouse at 9:15, I noticed two things: a calendar, showing our case scheduled for 1:30 this afternoon; and a lack of client. He'd overslept and was close to being there. I told him not to bother parking and to come back in four hours.  After tending to a few other things, I made it back there by 1:15, and again, no client. He showed up just in time and got a good result, but my layover was down to just a few hours now.

Damn, though, I thought. Just enough time. So I entered the main World Gym for the whole Rochester area, which fills a former bowling alley on the far east side of the city, got myself checked in, was shown the locker room, and proceeded to change....

into everything except the pair of sneakers, I remembered at that instant, were still sitting on the landing between kitchen and garage.  I'd deliberately passed on taking a rattier pair actually next to the bag when I packed the rest of it, and that turned out to be the one thing- well, two things- I forgot.  I was about to admit ::wait for it:: defeet, but finally decided to try my luck without the extra arch support. Hell, it's an elliptical; your feet barely move. Plus, how different is a sock-ish workout from those hideous looking rubber foot things they're always trying to push on us?

So I made it, so far with no ill effect.  Only lasted 40 minutes, but that was more a function of the machines being different there than what I'm used to.

Now the lay is over. One more client meeting, possibly (damn better be) a document pickup from another, and then Margie's local memorial service at 6 tonight.  Tomorrow, it's making the appointment with the neurologist over this early-onset Alzheimer's of mine- assuming I remember to schedule it:P
